About The Position

The Transit Inspector is a key member of the team that provides direction to conventional bus operations, including service monitoring, in-field service adjustments, operational support to bus operators, customer service and assistance, incident investigation and reporting, and coordination with emergency services and other internal and external transit personnel. Transit Inspectors are responsible for the continuous development of a team of operators by providing effective coaching, performance management and team building.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, supplemented by courses in Administration, Human Relations and Organizational Behaviour
  • Minimum of five years working in a Transit environment, with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Strathcona County route network and street system/traffic regulations in the Edmonton Capital Region, including knowledge of the County’s Transit Bylaws and the Alberta Traffic Safety Act applicable to public transit vehicles
  • Detailed knowledge of transit operational policies and procedures, including incident investigations, and the ability to analyze information to make sound decisions quickly, often in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in team building, mentoring and mediation
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office suite
  • Valid Alberta Class 2 Driver’s licence and submission of a Driver’ Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Valid Air Brake (Q) endorsement
  • Submission of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Successful completion of Level 2 - Forensic Collision Investigations (or equivalent training)
  • Ability to work a casual shift schedule with a variety of hours including evenings, weekends and holidays

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a frontline supervisor for Transit Operators, balancing proactive coaching and mentoring with decisive performance management, requiring strong conflict resolution skills to successfully navigate challenging conversations, progressive discipline, and end-to-end personnel management within a unionized framework
  • Supervise the work of Transit Operators to establish priorities and responsibilities for daily on-street requirements, provide support and ensure adherence to policy and procedures, and on road support
  • Provides reports on key performance indicators, ensuring adherence of OH&S policies, model and promotes appropriate behaviours, foster communication and continuous improvement
  • Provides daily oversight of conventional bus service; monitor and adjust scheduled service plans and implement staging of buses, route detours, on-site management of special events and charter service
  • Ensures roadways, bus shelters and vehicles are safe and serviceable, enforce Transit Bylaws, issues violation tickets and responds to security issues as needed
  • Supporting the Transit Department's OH&S program and champion a culture of workplace safety
  • Conducting on-scene incident assessments, prioritizing safety, security, and customer experience by evaluating the situation and completing necessary documentation
  • Conduct investigations of collisions, incidents, and complaints, preparing detailed reports as required
  • Coordinate with dispatch and other staff to resolve service issues, provide ongoing information and liaise with other departments regarding bus operations
