About The Position

Blacksburg Transit Bus Operators perform semiskilled work operating a transit vehicle on an assigned route and schedule. The role includes assisting passengers, providing information about Transit services, monitoring vehicle condition, and completing reports. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Transit Operations Supervisor. This is an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events and a safety-sensitive position subject to federal drug and alcohol testing guidelines, including pre-employment drug screening. No experience is required, and training is provided. Applicants must be at least 19 years old and have, or be willing to obtain, a valid Virginia commercial driver's license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) with a satisfactory driving record. Requirements

Must have, or be willing to obtain, a valid Commonwealth of Virginia commercial driver's license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) and have a satisfactory driving record.

Position is subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines under Federal Transit Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations; pre-employment drug screening is required.
Ability to meet the stated physical and sensory requirements, including operating vehicles and equipment and communicating and hearing effectively.

Responsibilities

Operate a transit vehicle on an assigned route and schedule.
Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections and report defects or maintenance needs.
Attend required meetings, trainings, and classes.
Complete assigned shift paperwork and other required job-related paperwork.
Collect fares and transfers; check passenger IDs and passes; and enter required information on a mobile data terminal and/or paper.
Board and offload passengers.
Assist passengers in accordance with ADA requirements, including operating the wheelchair lift and mobility-device tie-downs, and ensure ADA announcements are made.
Provide passengers with schedule information.
Operate the radio and report unusual traffic conditions, vehicle condition, passenger emergencies, and other problems.
Assist with training staff and new operators as appropriate.
Use a computer for work scheduling and email programs.
Comply with Blacksburg Transit and Town of Blacksburg policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
