About The Position

Espey is seeking a Transformer Design Engineer to design custom transformers and magnetic components for military and industrial products. The role involves leading and collaborating on design work throughout project development cycles that can range from a few weeks to over a year, depending on product type and project scope. The engineer will apply engineering, business, and production knowledge to develop custom products and collaborate across functions to bring designs into production. The position provides start-to-finish ownership of magnetic components, from interpreting specifications and developing designs through prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. The engineer will work with drafting and mechanical engineering teams on production documentation, reports, and test procedures, and will contribute to troubleshooting both new and legacy products. Onsite work is preferred; hybrid work is possible, and remote work may be available for highly experienced contributors. Relocation is provided for onsite work. The role requires U.S. citizenship and eligibility to secure a U.S. Government security clearance and access export-controlled data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering field.
  • At least 5 years of experience with transformers and magnetic devices.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to secure a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ruggedized products for military and heavy-industrial magnetics or power-electronic applications.
  • Experience with magnetics, transformers, inductors, or MILSPEC products for airborne, ground-mobile, or Naval applications.
  • Knowledge of Excel, SolidWorks, FEA methods, MATLAB, or equivalent software.
  • Demonstrated experience using unique and custom design techniques without overreliance on auto-generated software programs.
  • Experience with designs having BIL requirements up to 15 kV class and knowledge of dry-type transformers up to 5 MVA.
  • Experience with core selection, winding design, conductor selection (Litz, foil, or solid), loss modeling, and loss characterization in inductors and transformers.
  • Knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards and experience with military standards such as MIL-E-917.
  • Technical writing skills for reports, test procedures, trade studies, and other customer-facing technical documentation.
  • Ability to navigate complexity and troubleshoot unique problems, using critical thinking, innovation, determination, resilience, and cross-functional partnerships.
  • Project management, team leadership, independent work balanced with cross-functional collaboration, bias for action, creativity, engineering expertise, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design transformers ranging from small PCB-mount units to 5 MVA, including medium-voltage dry-type transformers, from 60 Hz to medium frequency.
  • Design inductors and reactors for low- and high-frequency applications from 60 Hz to 500 kHz.
  • Support design studies for novel transformer concepts for high-power-density applications.
  • Develop custom magnetics, lead product estimates, and create design documentation based on customer Statements of Work and performance specifications.
  • Own magnetic components from specification through design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Interface with drafting to develop production documentation packages, test procedures, and technical reports.
  • Read and interpret customer specifications and determine their impact on design.
  • Help troubleshoot new and legacy transformer product builds.
  • Lead and participate in magnetic design efforts and mentor others on core selection, winding methods, insulation systems, and performance estimates.
  • Work with mechanical engineers to develop design reports, review packages, test procedures, and testing approaches.
