About The Position

This is a non-exempt, entry-level position responsible for coordinating the operation and maintenance of a Tribal Transfer Station.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Tribal and Federal regulations as they pertain to solid waste management and recycling; Tribal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (TOSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Department of Energy (DOE).
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn transfer station procedures and operation.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn waste reduction, recycling, and moderate risk household waste.
  • Sufficient language skills to document transfer station activity and prepare routine reports.
  • Sufficient human relation skills to maintain positive work relationships with internal customers and vendors, and to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature.
  • Ability to maintain cardiovascular fitness to engage in active physical labor.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ambulatory ability to sit, walk to campus locations, and operate vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move medium to heavy weight materials up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis; up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, to drive a vehicle, and to observe work processes.
  • Ability to use hearing for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to provide staff training sessions, and to hear sound prompts from equipment.
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination, arm hand dexterity and visual acuity read numbers and words.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • CPR/First Aid card or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain through employment.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license (if required) and eligibility for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance.
  • Pre-employment background clearances (if applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the operation and maintenance of a Tribal Transfer Station.
  • Interpreting and enforcing transfer station regulations.
  • Distinguishing between and separating recycling materials from non-recyclables.
  • Writing and maintaining accurate maintenance records for the transfer station operations.
  • Representing the program professionally with compassion and sensitivity with clientele from diverse populations.
  • Sorting material and separating solid waste from recyclable materials and disposing of using proper techniques.
  • Assisting with completing project deadlines.
  • Working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Communicating effectively in person, via telephone, email and in written format.
  • Minimizing confrontational and adversarial situations.
  • Effectively executing and following oral and written instructions.
  • Attending training as needed.
  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with employees, Tribal Officials and the general public and to minimize confrontational and adversarial situations.
  • Working with the public effectively and tactfully.
  • Carrying out instructions and to work independently.
  • Maintaining confidentiality.
