About The Position

Road & Rail Services is hiring a dependable Transfer Operator for our Indianapolis operation. This position is responsible for safely transferring hazardous and non-hazardous bulk products between railcars and tank trucks using pumps, hoses, valves, fittings, and related transfer equipment. Because some of the products handled at this facility are classified as hazardous materials, employees must be comfortable working in a highly regulated environment where following established procedures exactly is essential. Transfer Operators receive applicable training and are expected to follow all company, customer, environmental, and regulatory requirements for the products they are authorized to handle.

Requirements

  • Valid state-issued driver's license
  • Ability to lift and handle up to 60 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders and safely work at elevated heights
  • Ability to perform physical work throughout the shift
  • Willingness to work directly with hazardous and non-hazardous bulk materials
  • Ability and willingness to wear required PPE, including specialized protective equipment when necessary
  • Ability to understand and consistently follow detailed written procedures
  • Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
  • Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, wind, and changing weather conditions
  • Availability to work every other weekend
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the team

Responsibilities

  • Connect and disconnect hoses, fittings, valves, and transfer equipment used with hazardous and non-hazardous products
  • Verify equipment, connections, and transfer setups before product movement begins
  • Follow established procedures for the specific material being transferred
  • Monitor pumps, hoses, valves, connections, railcars, and tank trucks throughout the transfer process
  • Heat, sparge, or sample products when required by established procedures
  • Follow applicable product-handling instructions and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information
  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) based on the product and task being performed
  • Wear specialized chemical-resistant or hazardous-material PPE when required
  • Maintain awareness of potential leaks, spills, pressure issues, equipment malfunctions, and other unsafe conditions
  • Immediately stop work and report abnormal or unsafe conditions in accordance with established procedures
  • Follow site procedures for spill prevention, containment, reporting, and emergency situations
  • Complete required transfer and product documentation accurately
  • Maintain clean transfer areas and help prevent product contamination or unintended releases
  • Follow all applicable company, customer, environmental, and regulatory safety requirements
  • Inspect railcars, tank trucks, hoses, valves, pumps, and fittings before use
  • Safely climb railcar ladders and access elevated work areas
  • Prepare equipment for incoming and outgoing transfers
  • Assist with routine yard, equipment, and facility maintenance
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition
  • Keep work areas clean and organized
  • Communicate transfer status and operational concerns to supervision
  • Follow railroad and facility procedures while working around tracks, railcars, trucks, and moving equipment
