About The Position

The Training Sergeant plans, organizes, facilitates, and supervises recruit orientation and training, the Correctional Field Training Program, Correctional Emergency Response Team, and in-service training programs. This position also supports the daily operations of the County Jail.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 60 college credits in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
Five (5) years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement or corrections officer.
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, supervise, or coach in a professional environment.
Wisconsin Basic Jail Officer training completion.
Citizen of the United States.
Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted.
Fingerprinting will be kept on file for identification purposes.
Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Position will require a pre-employment physical.
Possess and maintains a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
As a condition of continued employment, attend 24 hours of annual ongoing training in law enforcement/corrections.

Nice To Haves

Associate degree in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field.
One (1) year of experience in leadership, employee development, supervision, management, or continued education in professional development.
Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language.
CPR/First Aid Certification.
Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.

Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, facilitates, and supervises recruit orientation and training, the Correctional Field Training Program, Correctional Emergency Response Team, and in-service training programs.
Supports the daily operations of the County Jail.
Applies knowledge of jail standards, procedures, rules, and regulations to implement strategic training programs.
Evaluates employee skills and performance quality and identifies gaps that require improvement.
Plans, prepares, and evaluates training curriculum, materials, and course outlines.
Facilitates courses in-person or virtually.
Evaluates successful completion of training to determine expected outcomes are achieved.
Directs expertise in first aid and first response, and correctional officer tactics and techniques to facilitate informative, engaging, and credible training sessions.
Uses ability to persuade, challenge, and motivate participants to enhance learning and retention of concepts, behaviors, and actions for immediate application in the field.
Employs exceptional organizational skills to arrange and schedule training including the reservation of class space, lodging, meals, and preparation of the reports necessary for the expenditures.
Utilizes personal computer operational skills to prepare accurate and clear written reports and documentation.
Ensures all mandated training is completed and documented.
Verifies documentation adheres to state and department standards.
Manages the custody and control of training records.
Implements knowledge of rules, regulations, statutes, and policies regarding custody and discipline of prisoners and operation of jail facilities to assist in completing day-to-day administrative and operational tasks to meet goals and objectives.
Applies ability to observe and accurately interpret individuals' mental and physical conditions and behavior to supervise inmate population.
Verifies health and welfare of inmates, reviews inmate special needs and recommends appropriate referrals, housing, and precautions.
Adapts agile customer service skills to effectively communicate with inmates.
Answers and resolves inmates special requests and grievances.
Exercises organizational and attention to detail skills to support a safe environment for inmates.
Reviews rosters, logs, behavior sheets and other paperwork related to documentation of inmate’s time in jail.
Ensures prisoner rights.
Verifies inmate count, key count, and monetary fund balances.
Conducts on-site inspections of staff and inmates.
Executes acute thinking to take control of emergency situations.
Coordinates and respond to alarms.
Review incident reports for follow-up and referral.
Provides effective and credible testimony in a court of law.
Thoroughly reviews case facts in preparation of testimony.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a wide variety of people.
Communicates with the general public on public safety related matters.
Serves as liaison between the Sheriff’s Office and the community in public relations capacity.
Responds to questions and complaints from the public, assigned personnel, County departments, and other agencies.
Participates in meetings with departmental personnel, outside agencies, and other County departments.
In the absence of the Lieutenant, exercises delegated authority and responsibilities of that position.
Maintains current knowledge of professionally related matters.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
