About The Position

Portland Community College (PCC) is seeking a Trainer/Education Specialist for a casual, temporary position to support the CNC Operator Readiness Essentials (CORE) program. This program aims to enhance skills, facilitate job placement, and provide continuing education opportunities for a diverse student population. The role involves recruiting and onboarding students, instructing soft skills, managing administrative tasks, and supporting program events. PCC is the largest post-secondary institution in Oregon, committed to making high-quality education accessible and contributing to community economic development. Casual positions have a working hour limit per fiscal year.

Requirements

  • Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an educational or training environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with college students, individuals from low-income communities, or at-risk populations.
  • Knowledge of job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace professional standards.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional techniques, assessment methods, and competency-based evaluation.
  • Knowledge of unique barriers faced by diverse and underrepresented student populations, along with equitable support strategies.
  • Knowledge of local labor market trends, employer expectations, and manufacturing career pathways.
  • Knowledge of college application/registration procedures and student record management practices.
  • Skills in tailoring instruction and communication styles to actively engage, support, and instruct diverse adult learners from varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Skills in designing, adapting, and refining practical curricula, learning modules, and assessment tools focused on essential career readiness skills (e.g., resume writing, interviewing, and workplace communication).
  • Skills in tracking student metrics, organizing event logistics (such as graduations and hiring days), and organizing day-to-day schedules with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse staff and student population.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work in an environment with regular interruptions.
  • Ability to communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to drive and use of personal vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Social Science, Communications, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Supports a short-term workforce training program for a diverse student population, including curriculum development, assessment instruments, and student evaluation methods.
  • Recruits, onboards, and supports diverse students in accessing the CORE class, assisting with PCC application and registration, leading orientation, and guiding students to resources.
  • Researches labor market information, employer needs, and student needs to continuously improve the program.
  • Provides instruction in essential workplace and job search skills to a diverse student population.
  • Supports administrative functions such as scheduling rooms, printing materials, updating class slides, tracking student data, and maintaining student evaluations.
  • Serves as an advocate to monitor and assess student progress towards training, employment, and education goals.
  • Provides student services including explaining policies, procedures, and processes, orienting students to facilities and equipment, distributing instructional materials, and offering set-up assistance in partnership with other program staff.
  • Supports the long-term success of the program through promotional activities like writing student success stories and maintaining success metrics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
