About The Position

This is a Motor Carrier Act Exempt position. The Trailer Tech Apprentice will be required to obtain the training, skills, and certifications necessary to qualify for promotion to Trailer Technician within one (1) to two (2) years, including becoming FMCSA-qualified to perform vehicle and brake inspections. On a typical day, the apprentice will assist with trailer inspections and brake replacement to gain the experience necessary to meet requirements of FMCSA 396.19 and 396.25. They will also complete component replacements, perform maintenance, service, and repairs on trailer doors and SafeStack Systems to units parked at the dock, and work alongside technicians in the shop to complete minor trailer repairs. Additionally, they will enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activities, operate specialized tooling and vehicles, and ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and well-maintained by reporting any damage or negligence to management immediately. The role involves interacting with operations management and shop management.

Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Basic mechanical skills
  • Basic computer skills for documenting maintenance, service, and repair activities
  • Able to perform safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
  • Desire to become a trailer mechanic
  • Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
  • Prior mechanical training or experience such as automotive or skilled trades
  • Own a set of basic hand tools
  • Have a desire to become a Technician Level 1

Responsibilities

  • Assist with trailer inspections and brake replacement to gain the experience necessary to meet requirements of FMCSA 396.19 and 396.25

  • Interact with operations management and shop management
  • Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. and occasionally more than 75 lbs.
  • Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
  • Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
