About The Position

Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices such as signs, pavement markings, and signal systems. Operates equipment and vehicles, ensures compliance with safety standards, and responds to maintenance needs and public concerns, including emergency repairs. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in Traffic control operations, roadway construction & maintenance or public works field operations required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with low voltage electrical work required.
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment in installing and maintaining traffic signs and pavement markings.
  • Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards (MUTCD).
  • Ability to obtain basic knowledge of equipment, materials and methods used in maintenance and repair of traffic signal systems.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and equipment specifications with the ability to learn to read and comprehend schematics.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 25 feet, standing in a raised bucket to repair, remove, or replace signal heads or other devices.
  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all City department personnel and general public.
  • Valid state issued driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Traffic Signal Technician certification within 1 year of hire required.
  • Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Safety certification within 1 year of hire required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs labor involved in installation and maintenance of traffic signs, crosswalks and other traffic control markings.
  • Performs inspection, removal and application of pavement and curb markings to city owned road surfaces, such as highway lanes, parking lot lines, intersection markings, pedestrian walkways, directional arrows, and other markings.
  • Fabricates and replaces street names signs, stop signs, and other signs both for traffic department and other departments.
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of painting equipment.
  • Maintains an accurate daily work log documenting the maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Set up work zone traffic control such as cones, barricades and flagging.
  • Assists with monitoring minimum inventory levels and preparing equipment, material, and supply order information as needed.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for the maintenance of traffic control, signal systems, sign standards, and all other applicable safety and security standards.
  • Assists with the routine maintenance and repair of traffic signal and street light equipment, to include basic programming of controllers.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot signal systems and electrical components.
  • Assists in projects for upgrading traffic signals and equipment.
  • Responds to complaints regarding traffic signal problems, damaged or missing signs, taking appropriate action in repairing or replacing item, makes note of findings and reports to supervisor.
  • Performs emergency repairs after normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Operates pickup trucks and elevating bucket trucks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various equipment and facilities.
  • Operates a variety of power construction equipment used in traffic department such as paint machines, tamper, jackhammers, cutting equipment, solder tools, detection devices, and electronic troubleshooting and repair devices.
  • May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.
