About The Position

The Westerville Electric Division is seeking a part-time traffic technician to assist with the maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signals and controls. The City maintains more than 60 signalized intersections, 31 school zone beacons that span three school districts, and 32 pedestrian crossing beacons. The ideal candidate has technical experience and the willingness to learn. Applicants must be able to work an average of 29 hours per week Monday through Friday, with a schedule to be determined upon offer of employment. This position is being posted until filled.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio vehicle operator’s license and remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications stated above.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, safety practices and procedures, state and federal guidelines, principles, and practiced related to uniform traffic control devices, occupational hazards, signal coordination, traffic signal and sign maintenance and installation, traffic sign design and development, basic traffic statistical survey methods and procedures, basic electricity, agency goals and objectives, agency policies and procedures.
  • Skill in word processing, basic computer operation, electronics, motor vehicle operation, use of modern office equipment and software, critical thinking, judgment and decision making.
  • Ability to conduct or participate in traffic data surveys, climb into and work from aerial bucket in repairing traffic devices, ensure compliance with related safety standards, voltage testers and meters, deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context, prepare routine correspondence, compile and prepare reports, communicate effectively, comprehend simple sentences with common vocabulary, develop and maintain effective working relationships, travel to and gain access to work site, demonstrate professionalism, apply management principles to solve agency problems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signals and controls.
  • Responsible for traffic signal repair and highway sign installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Troubleshoots signal equipment problems and applies both temporary and permanent solutions to all city traffic control equipment.
  • Plan and schedule preventive maintenance programs for all city traffic signals.
  • Maintain up-to-date records and reports of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Oversee traffic control field studies.
  • Collect traffic data and develop remedies for safety problems.
  • Determine need for traffic control signals and signs.
  • Investigate complaints from the public regarding all phases of the traffic control activity.
  • Conduct traffic studies such as condition surveys, volume analyses, accident analyses, and delay.
  • Respond to traffic complaints and malfunctions.
  • Isolate and identify any malfunctions in signal components and systems.
  • Make instantaneous decisions about how to handle problems.
  • Apply both temporary and permanent solutions to mechanical problems.
  • Communicate regularly with other departments, the public, engineers, contractors, and others regarding traffic control problems and issues.
  • Confer with law enforcement and street or highway personnel from other governmental jurisdictions as well as the City regarding traffic control problems.
  • Provide expert testimony regarding traffic signals.
  • Determine the need and placement of signs for temporary special events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
