About The Position

This position is responsible for simple to moderately complex preparation and review of standard sign structure designs and details, evaluation of field inspections and in-depth investigations for traffic structures as well as preparation, review, and updating of simple to moderately complex structure and standard plans in the department’s Sign Structures Manual. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Traffic Structures Engineer. Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor of science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college OR a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
  • Those applying with only a degree must have a minimum of 2.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • If cumulative GPA is between 2.0 and 2.5 (out of 4.0), applicants must also possess a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
  • Thirty-seven (37) months of experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires occasional statewide and out-of-state travel which sometimes includes overnight stays.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering with emphasis on structural engineering.
  • Knowledge of applicable highway standards for traffic structures, fabrication codes, and the fabrication process.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Current registration as a Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois and/or current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates field inspections and performs in-depth investigations of simple to moderately complex traffic structures.
  • Analyzes and reviews simple to moderately complex improvements in the development, design and details of the department’s overhead sign and traffic structures.
  • Reviews and distributes shop plans for prestressed concrete, steel, and aluminum structural elements.
  • Assessment of damage, corrosion, fatigue, and other deficiencies in existing traffic structures and development of simple to moderately complex repair or replacement strategies.
  • Conducts studies, structural reviews, or other tasks assigned by the Shop Plans and Traffic Structures Group Engineer, Shop Plans and Steel Fabrication Unit Chief, or the Bridge Design Section Chief.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
