About The Position

Under general supervision of the Traffic Signal Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Lakewood’s traffic control systems. This position will apply technical knowledge, follow proper traffic signal operation practices and procedures, determine priorities and make independent judgments in emergency situations. Essential functions include troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with signal cabinets, various detection systems, Ethernet data communication methods, street lighting systems, traffic signal preemption systems, and lightning protection devices. The role involves interpreting plans, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical regulations, as well as performing repairs on traffic device malfunctions and evaluating equipment problems. This position also provides guidance, training, and oversight for lower-level Traffic Signal Specialists and Technicians.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent and appropriate vocational training in electronics or electrical fields
  • Three years’ experience as Traffic Signal Technician (II) or equivalent experience
  • Driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Forklift Certification or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Tech Construction L2
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Senior Field Tech L3
  • IMSA Fiber Optics Tech
  • Ability to program advanced operational fields for traffic signal controllers and signal management software for desired operation.
  • Ability to interpret plans, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Technical expertise in traffic control fiber optic and radio communication systems.
  • Knowledge of NEMA standards TS1, TS2 and ATC cabinets.
  • Knowledge of IMSA wire and cable specifications and standard wiring configurations.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and application to traffic systems.
  • Ability to drive and operate all Transportation Engineering Division equipment/vehicles (bucket truck, forklift, scissor-lift, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively in a team setting and work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses issues with signal cabinets utilizing knowledge of NEMA standards TS1, TS2 and ATC cabinets.
  • Installs, configures and diagnoses issues with various detection systems (Video, Radar, Microwave, Thermal Imaging, Inductive loop and Lidar).
  • Installs, configures and diagnoses issues with Ethernet data communication methods (Fiber Optic, Radio Link, Cellular modem).
  • Installs, configures and diagnoses issues with street lighting systems including LED, HPS and metal halide fixtures, wiring circuits, photocells and electrical service cabinets.
  • Installs, configures and diagnoses issues with traffic signal preemption systems for emergency response vehicles.
  • Interprets plans, wiring diagrams, blueprints and technical regulations utilizing knowledge of IMSA wire and cable specifications and standard wiring configurations.
  • Installs, configures and diagnoses issues with lightning protection devices.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs traffic device malfunctions, and evaluates equipment problems by interpreting plans, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Provides guidance, training and oversight for Traffic Signal Specialists (II) and Traffic Signal Technicians (I) as assigned.
