The Department of Public Works has an opening for a Traffic Safety Officer in the Transportation Services Bureau. This position provides operational leadership for the City’s Traffic Safety Division and is responsible for advancing Safe Streets Long Beach and Vision Zero goals through the development, coordination, and implementation of programs intended to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The role oversees administration of the Automated Speed Enforcement Program, including compliance, vendor management, performance monitoring, and strategic reinvestment of program revenues into safety improvements. The position also directs the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program and related quick-build projects that improve conditions for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. The Traffic Safety Officer manages data-driven safety strategies by analyzing collision trends, identifying priority locations, and evaluating the effectiveness of implemented countermeasures. This role ensures traffic safety projects move efficiently from intake through implementation by coordinating with internal bureaus and divisions, public safety partners, and external agencies. The position also leads community engagement efforts, responds to stakeholder / community concerns, and promotes transparent and equitable project delivery. Overall, the Traffic Safety Officer exists to provide focused leadership, accountability, and specialized expertise necessary to create safer streets throughout the city.
