About The Position

This position involves complex work requiring the integration of civil and traffic engineering skills, project management, and staff and consultant management for the Traffic Group within the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works. Work requires creativity and engineering judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard practices, procedures, and criteria. The position requires broad knowledge in civil engineering, the traffic specialty area, and good knowledge of principles and practices of related specialties. The work includes close coordination with other agencies, various metro districts, and other County workgroups. Generally, the hiring range is $115,552-$144,440 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible traffic/civil engineering experience.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • Must be a Colorado licensed/registered Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP), or similar or have the ability to obtain within six months.
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license within two weeks of hire.
  • This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.

Responsibilities

  • Manages in-house engineering projects from initial planning, through design, and to project completion.
  • Prepares studies, location analysis, designs, and plan specifications.
  • Manages staff workload and assignments.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring; and conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Manages consultants and/or contractors to ensure compliance to standards and quality assurance.
  • Directs necessary changes.
  • Manages operating and project account budgets.
  • Attends Board of County Commissioner hearings and work sessions and makes presentations to both when required.
  • Reviews development concepts and plans, assists with transportation planning reviews.
  • Identifies potential capital improvement projects.
  • Analyzes and ensures roadway safety projects, capital improvements, traffic studies / recommendations / plans meet County standards or criteria.
  • Develops, analyzes, reviews, and approves engineering reports and recommendations, maps, comprehensive plans, engineering drawings, and plans and specifications.
  • Interacts with the public to investigate and resolve traffic concerns or deficiencies.
  • Attends neighborhood meetings to discuss projects with interested and affected property owners and homeowner groups.
  • Conducts site inspections.
  • Inspects and reviews field work of inspectors.
  • Inspects traffic engineering projects which are in-process and at time of completion.
  • Monitors progress and ensures conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of the traffic engineering work as part of a major project or leads a whole project of moderate scope.
  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Remains current on industry practices and emerging techniques/technologies to develop new and improved approaches.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Leads the development of traffic operational and safety projects.
  • Updates and maintains the County’s traffic safety action plan.
  • Identifies and pursues grants and leverages technology to improve mobility and safety outcomes.
  • Conducts traffic improvement studies, recommends projects for implementation, and coordinates with capital improvement projects division to advance traffic projects to construction.
