About The Position

RK&K is seeking a motivated and creative Traffic Engineer to join our highly successful traffic group in our Richmond, Virginia office. As a Traffic Engineer with RK&K, you will work alongside and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry. You will play a crucial role within our team, performing traffic analyses and developing traffic engineering designs to improve transportation systems throughout the region, and will complete tasks both in the office and in the field as needed. Our projects focus on improving operations and safety for motorized and non-motorized modes of travel, providing healthy and livable communities, and implementing technology-based transportation improvements. Under the supervision of a professional engineer, you will provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.

Requirements

  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam OR have the ability to take and pass the FE exam within 12 months of employment
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field with Traffic or Transportation focus
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Exceptional writing, verbal communication and presentation skills including public speaking
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Classwork in traffic engineering
  • Participation in professional societies (ITE, ASCE, ASHE, etc.)
  • Prior internship experience in Traffic or Transportation Engineering
  • Working knowledge of MicroStation/AutoCAD, GIS, GuideSIGN, AutoTurn, Synchro, Vissim, HCS
  • Exposure to traffic engineering references (MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO guidelines)

Responsibilities

  • Provide traffic engineering support for projects ranging from small scale studies and design for isolated intersections to complex solutions for Complete Streets corridors and major highway systems.
  • Prepare design plans for traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control/work zones, lighting, design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, toll systems, traffic calming, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS).
  • Perform field investigations, collect and compile traffic data, evaluate traffic safety and operational conditions for all road users, and develop recommendations for improvements.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and design plans.
  • Communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
