About The Position

As a Traffic Engineering Professional Engineer, you will lead the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of traffic engineering elements for complex transportation infrastructure projects. You will serve as a technical resource and trusted advisor throughout the project lifecycle, applying advanced engineering principles and independent professional judgment to develop safe, efficient traffic solutions that improve mobility, optimize operations, and enhance roadway safety for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users. Work includes traffic studies, traffic control plans, signal and ITS designs, signing and pavement marking plans, work zone traffic management strategies, and safety evaluations in accordance with applicable standards. You will provide technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, oversee design development from concept through final delivery, and ensure traffic engineering work is high quality, constructible, and compliant with regulations. You will collaborate with project managers, roadway designers, planners, public agencies, and clients to identify needs, evaluate alternatives, mitigate operational impacts, and develop practical solutions. The role also includes mentoring junior staff, supporting business development, and helping advance the firm's traffic engineering capabilities while delivering projects on schedule and within budget. The hybrid role operates between office and field environments. It routinely involves standard office equipment and may occasionally involve exposure to inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, or bodies of water, depending on project requirements. Physical activities include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, and hearing; occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling; and possibly operating a company vehicle or lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 pounds. Employment is contingent on successful completion of applicable pre-employment substance screening and background checks.

  • Experience with traffic analysis and simulation software such as Synchro, VISSIM, HCS, or similar tools.
  • Proficiency with Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of traffic engineering design plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates for transportation projects.
  • Design and oversee traffic control systems, including traffic signals, signing, pavement markings, lighting, and work zone traffic control.
  • Perform and review traffic engineering calculations, modeling, and analyses, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, agency criteria, and client requirements.
  • Coordinate and integrate traffic design activities across multidisciplinary teams and provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.
  • Support project engineers and managers with quality control reviews, schedule tracking, risk management, and coordination of traffic-related design deliverables.
  • Support and interpret intersection, corridor, and multimodal traffic studies as they relate to design implementation and final construction plans.
  • Prepare engineers’ opinions of probable construction cost (OPCC) and participate in agency and public meetings as the traffic engineering representative.
  • Collaborate with project managers, roadway designers, planners, public agencies, and clients to identify needs, evaluate alternatives, mitigate operational impacts, and develop practical solutions.
  • Contribute to business development and help advance the firm's traffic engineering capabilities.
