About The Position

SEH is currently searching for a Traffic Design Engineer to join our talented Transportation team. This role is suited well for an experienced engineer who enjoys leading and delivering traffic design work across multimodal transportation projects of varying size and complexity to enhance safety, mobility, and system performance. This covers everything from fast, small design assignments and quick-build demonstration builds to major improvements of urban corridors, highways, and interchanges. As an experienced Traffic Engineer you will be responsible for the preparation and coordination of design plans and specifications for traffic engineering items including: Traffic signals, hybrid beacons, and rectangular flashing beacons Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and construction phasing Traffic signing Pavement marking You will be responsible for managing, directing, and completing tasks or projects for a range of project types including construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of urban corridors, highways, alternative intersections, interchanges, county and city roadways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and demonstration projects. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong attention to detail, communicate effectively, demonstrate effective teamwork, and have working knowledge of the MUTCD and relevant design guidance and be proficient in the application of quality management and quality assurance processes. You will contribute to review and delivery of traffic design deliverables while playing an important role in the success of a wide range of transportation projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota with ability to be licensed in Minnesota within 3 months
  • Previous experience specializing in Traffic Design including preparation of Final Construction Documents for signing and pavement marking design
  • Proficiency in MicroStation/Open Roads Designer and AutoCAD and/or Civil3D
  • Working knowledge of MnDOT/MN MUTCD Standards and best practices
  • Previous experience conducting and directing traffic engineering design work to prepare plans and completion of QA/QC reviews as required for 30%, 60%, 90% submittals including cost estimates and specifications
  • Experience working with multidisciplined teams on complex projects
  • The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

  • Prequalified for MnDOT Work Type 14.6 Signing Plan Design and Special Provisions Levels 1, 2 & 3
  • Prequalified for MnDOT Work Type 14.4 Temporary Traffic Control Plan Design & Special Provisions Levels 1, 2, & 3
  • Preparation and coordination of design plans and specifications for staging, maintenance of traffic, traffic signals and ITS.
  • Established client relationships with City, County, other agency and/or MnDOT staff in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro Area, and/or greater Minnesota.
  • Additional relationships in North Dakota, South Dakota and/or Iowa are a plus.
  • Active participation or interest in professional organizations, conferences and technical publications
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
  • Road Safety Professional 1 (RSP1) certification
  • Working knowledge of HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic or other Traffic Engineering Software packages
  • Working knowledge of GIS
  • Ability to prepare traffic impact studies and conduct traffic safety studies
  • Supervisory and/or mentoring experience

  • Managing, directing, and completing tasks or projects for a range of project types including construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of urban corridors, highways, alternative intersections, interchanges, county and city roadways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and demonstration projects.
  • Work and learn from some of our award-winning traffic team leaders: WTS Minnesota Woman of the Year and the 2025 Young Transportation Professional of the Year
  • Leading traffic design teams, completing traffic design, and providing quality assurance reviews
  • Representing technical work with internal and external team members, clients/owners, and other agency and community stakeholders
  • Collaborating directly with clients/owners, contractors, and stakeholders to optimize safety, innovation, and constructability
  • Applying MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT standards to real-world design challenges
  • Supporting or leading innovative design solutions on complex and high-profile transportation projects
  • Authoring Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) to analyze impacts and mitigation strategies of MOT and staging designs
  • Providing strong quality management and quality assurance for all design plans and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with and provide support to other members of the traffic engineering team and SEH’s highway design, planning, civil, wastewater, landscape architecture and other groups throughout Minnesota and the upper Midwest as needed and where interest is shown, you will also have the opportunity to collaborate on project teams in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, and Texas.
