About The Position

The Traffic Control Technician I performs semi-skilled and technical work installing, maintaining, and repairing the Town's traffic control devices, including street signs, pavement markings, and traffic signal systems. This position helps ensure the safe and efficient movement of motorists and pedestrians by maintaining traffic infrastructure in accordance with state and federal standards. Work involves fabricating and installing traffic signs, painting pavement markings, troubleshooting traffic signal equipment, performing inspections, and maintaining inventory and records. Employees work independently and as part of a team in varying weather conditions and around active traffic. This position participates in the department's on-call rotation and assists with emergency and inclement weather response. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated through inspections, observations, and adherence to established standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Zero (0) to two (2) years of experience in electronics repair
  • Experience with electrical wiring and equipment operation OR An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Possession of a valid NC Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricates street signs, traffic control signs, directional signs, and other signage as needed by the Town; arranges and applies lettering to blank signs; erects signs in accordance with state and federal guidelines and administrative requests; produces informational signs for other Town departments.
  • Maintains an inventory of parts and supplies used for sign fabrication and erection; notifies supervisor when materials need to be reordered; keeps records of material use and work activities.
  • Paint stop bars, crosswalks, and parking spaces.
  • Maintains and repairs electronic and electromechanical traffic control equipment and related systems.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs computerized controllers, timers, and other solid-state circuitry using electronic test equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signals, including programming phased timing, mounting and wiring signal heads and controller cabinets, ordering and maintaining parts, checking wiring, adjusting detectors, replacing filters and worn parts, and aligning signal heads.
  • Operates equipment safely in the presence of street and pedestrian traffic.
  • Assists with annual inspections of traffic control panels and devices; participates in on-call rotation during off-duty hours.
  • Conducts safety inspections and prepares related reports for Public Works.
  • Maintains office equipment such as computers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Supports the department's inclement weather response plan.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
