About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking two members for the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) to contribute to historic preservation projects at National Capital Parks-East (NACE). This program is designed for enthusiastic individuals interested in gaining experience in historic preservation, with no prior education or experience required. The interns will perform mission-critical maintenance and preservation projects, including painting, graffiti removal, vegetation management, masonry repair, and asphalt repair, to support the D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiatives. Daily tasks involve painting various park elements, cleaning structures, pruning trees and shrubs for safety and visibility, repairing walkways, and checking water drainage. Members will develop skills in preservation, restoration, stabilization, and maintenance of cultural sites. The program requires a minimum 26-week commitment.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be ages 18-30 (up to 35 if a U.S. veteran).
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A current and valid form of ID.
  • Willing to undergo and pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Willing to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations, and mid-term evaluations for longer terms.
  • Must not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mission-critical maintenance and preservation projects at National Capital Parks-East.
  • Conduct painting of posts, chains, bollards, picnic tables, planters, light posts, signposts, curbs, wayside bases and frames, trellises, and barriers.
  • Clean and wash wayside panels.
  • Clean exteriors of structures by removing graffiti and invasive plants.
  • Prune trees and shrubs to improve visibility and reduce hazards.
  • Repair walkways (softening edges) and secure railings to address safety hazards.
  • Perform water drainage checks.
  • Cultivate skills in preservation, restoration, stabilization, and maintenance projects.
