About The Position

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS), is seeking one member for the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This role involves supporting the Roads and Trails team and park mechanics by maintaining vehicles, equipment, and small engines used across the park. The intern will gain hands-on experience in equipment maintenance, supporting one of the National Park Service's most iconic landscapes. The position offers opportunities for professional development, exposure to land management agencies, and networking with professionals, potentially including shadowing different work groups. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with potential exposure to various weather conditions, moderate to high noise levels from tools, and environmental hazards. Strict adherence to safety protocols and equipment use is mandatory.

Requirements

• Must be authorized to work in the United States. ACE does not provide sponsorship for employment visas.
• Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
• Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
• A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
• Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements.
• Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks.
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.
• Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
• Must meet the PLC Eligibility requirements to be considered for this position.
• Must be between the ages of 16 and 30 (some agencies interpret these guidelines to include veterans up to age 35).
• Must be a U.S. citizen.

Responsibilities

• Performing preventive maintenance on park vehicles and equipment.
• Assisting with diagnostics and repairs on park vehicles and equipment.
• Maintaining service records for vehicles and equipment.
• Organizing tools and parts.
• Supporting repairs on tractors, trucks, trailers, water pumpers, mowers, and other small engines.
• Assisting with maintaining roads, trails, historic apple orchards, the park nursery, and other cultural landscape features as operational needs require.
• Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Lifting equipment and materials.
• Following established safety procedures while operating tools and machinery.
• Conducting duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.
• Using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

• Living allowance of $720/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
