About The Position

We are seeking a motivated Rail Trader to join our Eastern Grain Group. Reporting to the Eastern Grain Trading Manager, this position is part of the local and regional merchandising team responsible for grain trading on the CSX, NS and CN railroads. This role will focus on trading a rail corridor into the Southeast destination markets working collaboratively with other traders on the team. The individual will have accountability for the procurement and trading of corn to achieve optimum financial results while building strong relationships with customers, colleagues, and railroad personnel. The position is responsible for market communication, trading, logistics, accounting, arbitrage, daily P&L monitoring, and other customer related issues. As an established member of the merchandising team, this position requires a high level of strategic thinking, market knowledge, attention to detail, and is a highly motivated individual with the ability to take initiative.

Requirements

  • University degree in agriculture or business (i.e. economics, finance, accounting), supplemented with a minimum of five (5) years-experience in country elevator management or commodity merchandising in North America. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated capacity to excel within high risk, fast-paced work environment.
  • Proven ability to assess risk and exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Demonstrated negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the domestic and international trade.
  • Proven ability to manage effectively within a team based work environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with end-users, suppliers, and internal customers.

Responsibilities

  • Daily analysis of basis positions, freight positions, spread positions, and P&L
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of market conditions, prices, S&D, and trends in the local, national, and global level to develop trading strategies and market opinions accordingly.
  • Communicate market information both within the office and throughout the company as market opportunities present themselves
  • Work to make quick decisions in a fast market while accepting responsibility to defend them logically
  • Must exhibit a high level of organization to build and maintain strong relationships with accounts, including the handling of logistics, accounting, and other customer related issues that ensures excellent customer service
  • Understands customer requirements in order to collaborate and add value to both parties
  • Proactively seeks new business and arbitrage opportunities that profitably enhance company assets
  • Resolve issues or disputes that may arise during the rail trading process
  • Understand the significance of ADM Privately owned transportation (i.e. railcars, trucks and barges) and how to enhance profitability and utilization
  • Communicate with ADM Rail Rates team and external railroads to procure freight rates
  • Develop a working knowledge of freight spreads and competitor activities
  • Understand the importance of trading to enhance the profitability of ADM owned assets through favorable specs, timings, and placing elevator needs above individual goals
  • Understand margin and cash carry calculations & their effect on commodity pricing
  • Understand and has strict adherence to corporate compliance policies, safety systems, and programs
  • Ensure that individual goals are aligned with company goals
  • Develop understanding of local plant/elevator operations
  • Portray a positive image of the company and self when interacting with customers and colleagues
  • Is willing to work outside normal business hours including weekends with limited travel required throughout the year to trade events and customer visits to build rapport

  • Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.
