About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking a qualified Journeyperson Plumber/Pipefitter for its Mulgrave Operations Centre. This role is part of the CUPE Local 955 job classification and involves performing a full range of maintenance tasks for all facilities operated by the SRCE. The SRCE is committed to supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success within safe, equitable, and inclusive environments. The position requires adherence to the CUPE Collective Agreement, with preference given to senior qualified candidates. The SRCE serves approximately 5,948 students across 20 schools and 375 pre-primary children in 14 locations, covering the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond in northeastern Nova Scotia.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent through such as GED
  • Certification of qualification as a journeyperson pipefitter
  • Five years experience in pipefitting
  • Five years working experience in a building maintenance environment
  • Computer proficiency and experience
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license
  • Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a full range of maintenance manual tasks
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability and dexterity in the use of various manual power tools
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision

Nice To Haves

  • Plumbing experience and/or working towards a plumbing certification
  • Experience with CMMS
  • Experience with HVAC/heating systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems and understand P&ID's (piping and instrumentation diagrams)

Responsibilities

  • Performs work up to and including journey level trades work in constructing, maintaining and repairing building plumbing systems and components.
  • Acts in a leadership role in installation, maintenance, repair and construction projects.
  • Builds, repairs, maintains, and installs plumbing systems including but not limited to water, wastewater, and hydronic in accordance with established practices and standards.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of building or capital improvement projects. Determines material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of costs and schedules.
  • Performs semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required.
  • Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, national, provincial and local codes, other applicable standards and good practice of the trade.
  • Provide emergency response and corrective action for urgent building problems.
  • Maintain appropriate records including equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports, and other related data.
  • Ensures sufficient material, correct replacement parts and suppliers. Initiates ordering of supplies and replacement parts, including properly stocking vehicle and regularly recording of vehicle inventory.
  • Liaise with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work.
  • Complete and document work orders including time and materials and submit to operations department.
  • Provide written reports on any inspections and/or tests and make recommendations to improve performance.
  • Ensure duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Evaluates status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provides written reports.
  • Trains, and evaluates apprentices and other assigned staff; reviews progress and makes changes as needed.
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and SRCE policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
