About The Position

The Mason and Plasterer will perform masonry and plastering work within the campus community. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This position is FLSA Nonexempt and eligible for overtime. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. This position has been designated as an essential position, requiring reporting to work even during campus closures or limited operations during emergencies.

Requirements

Successful completion of a NYS two-year Mason and Plasterer Traineeship or NYS two-year masonry training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent masonry two-year training or apprenticeship program; OR four years of full time experience in masonry under a skilled journey-level mason / Plasterer which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program.
Apprenticeship training in masonry or training gained by completion of technical courses in masonry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Must have the ability to stand, stoop, bend and stretch for long periods of time.
Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid Class B NYS Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Must participate in the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (drug and alcohol testing) as required.
Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
If you do not possess the necessary CDL license, you Must obtain a Class B NYS Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of appointment to retain employment.
Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of official start date.

Responsibilities

Remove rough or defective areas and repair with fresh concrete.
Apply ceramic tiles to walls, floors and ceilings. Prepare surfaces by removing damaged tiles or apply plaster or concrete base, spread adhesive base on surfaces. Cut, shape and apply tiles to surfaces according to specifications.
Lay building materials such as stone, brick, concrete cinder block and the like to construct or repair walls, marking guidelines.
Dig out, form and pour and finish concrete slabs, steps and sidewalks using proper masonry tools.
Plan, layout and complete mason and plaster work. Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings and specifications. Ability to draw rough sketches or prepare plans from oral or written instructions. Estimates of labor and materials.
Emergencies – Remove snow and debris from campus roadways, parking lots and walkways to ensure they are passable at all-time including during and after snow and/or icing conditions and events or emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, etc.
Mix or direct the mixing of mortar. Spread mortar on working surface and to block or stone and position and align the blocks. Assemble materials, tools and equipment required to complete the project according to plans.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
