About The Position

Reporting to a Preventative Maintenance Supervisor, incumbent will perform tasks in the building trades (carpentry, masonry and painting) in support of building maintenance as part of a regional Rounding Team on the Virginia Tech campus. Incumbent will work closely with Preventative Maintenance Technicians, Plumbers, and Electricians assisting with plumbing and electrical tasks as required. The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Requirements

  • Journeyman-level experience in the installation, repair and maintenance practices, equipment, and materials used in one or more skilled trades including carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Working knowledge of blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, specification records, and operating and maintenance manuals; record-keeping and inventory experience.
  • Must be able to perform routine institutional painting tasks.
  • Ability to recognize and understand industry terminologies of multiple trades.
  • Ability to use a computer, keep accurate and complete records.
  • Ability to perform work with minimal margin of error and work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work as an effective team member, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
  • Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 75 pounds or more; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs; ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; ability to work for long periods of time standing, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • This position is designated as "Emergency Personnel".
  • May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
  • Must have health and safety medical check.
  • Must be able to use a respirator.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a large commercial or educational setting.
  • Good working knowledge of painting and glazing.
  • Experience in a work order/inventory management system.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Previous electrical and/or plumbing experience.
