About The Position

Pima County Facilities Management Department is looking for two Trades Maintenance Specialist I to join their team. The Trades Maintenance Specialist I leads, participates, or operates independently providing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble-shooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance. This position requires technical skills, experience and knowledge in the area of specialization and is accountable for activities, ensuring services or products comply with written procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, industry standards and statutory codes and requirements.

Requirements

  • Two years journey-level experience in landscape, turf, or building maintenance.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • The ability to obtain a jail pass is required.
  • Pre-employment background checks.
  • Post-job offer physical and/or drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in building construction, repair, or maintenance.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience working in landscape construction, turf maintenance, and basic irrigation system installation, repair, or maintenance.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in general maintenance of construction-type equipment (front end loader, utility tractor, brush cutter/mower, backhoe, skid steer, forklift, riding trencher, dozer, boom lift, water truck, etc.).
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with field operation equipment to include trenching, excavation, grading, auguring, boring, transporting job site materials, demolition, dust control, and/or open space mowing, etc.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience performing basic fence installation (barbwire, chain link, field fence, gates), or concrete and/or adobe construction, or rough carpentry.
  • Experience using basic computer programs, e-mail, work order documents and/or reports.
  • Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.
  • Some positions require Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator or backflow device inspector/repair person or installer, etc. at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles.
  • Leads fabrication and modifications of equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings.
  • Inspects, services, and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Conducts quality-control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing necessary corrective actions for optimal performance.
  • Inspects, approves, or certifies the work of others, if certified or authorized.
  • Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems.
  • Prepares oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects.
  • Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors.
  • Coordinates activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions.
  • Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided.
  • Conducts on-the-job training for employees in the assigned work-unit.
  • Manages the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Maintains security and accountability for all tools, equipment, and materials, especially in sensitive environments (e.g., medical, law enforcement, correctional settings).
  • Ensures the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implements work-site traffic control procedures.
  • Oversees the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.
