About The Position

The Trades Helper is an entry-level position that assists with routine trade operations, repairs, and maintenance. Under direct and immediate supervision, the role supports the installation, repair, operation, and maintenance of City of Dallas properties and facilities across trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, welding, roofing, equipment operation, mechanical, and automotive work. Work must comply with applicable federal, state, and city codes. Technical expertise is developed through on-the-job training or apprenticeship programs. The position works under senior trades personnel or crew leaders and follows established procedures, specifications, and safety standards. It may involve work at locations such as parks, recreation centers, streets, facilities, shops, waste areas, and other City sites. The role is subject to varying shifts, emergency call-outs, and inclement weather.

Requirements

At least six months of experience with exposure to general building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, construction, or other trade-related work.
Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Ability to obtain required safety certifications, such as OSHA certification, within a specified timeframe.
Basic understanding of tools, equipment, and safety practices used in construction and maintenance trades.
Willingness to learn trade-specific skills and procedures; strong work ethic and ability to learn basic skills in a chosen trade.
Attention to detail and ability to work under supervision in a team environment.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work in indoor and outdoor environments for extended periods.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions and around noise, dust, and other typical job-site elements.
Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
Ability to read schematic diagrams and blueprints, troubleshoot systems, and implement resolutions.
Ability to use hand tools, power tools, precision testing equipment, and/or troubleshooting equipment and follow their instructions.
Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to ask questions, communicate unknowns, and acquire knowledge through practice and theory.
Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective relationships.
Some positions require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License within the probationary period.
An intensive background check is required for security-sensitive locations.

Nice To Haves

Enrollment in a Dallas County high school or Dallas College vocational certification program is preferred.

Responsibilities

Assist with troubleshooting by observing activities and identifying, detailing, and recording issues for trades workers.
Support installation of components and systems needed for the operation of the assigned trade.
Assist with demolition and reconstruction of City properties, equipment, and facilities, including renovation and maintenance projects.
Document maintenance and repair activities, maintain accurate work logs, and assist with administrative tasks.
Learn and assist with preventive maintenance practices to extend equipment life and support operational efficiency.
Learn to use blueprints, diagrams, manuals, and system guides to locate equipment and verify compliance with city codes.
Follow applicable policies, procedures, and safety standards for various trades.
Perform additional tasks in support of trade operations and crew objectives.
