About The Position

CWI Works has an open position in the National Park Service's (NPS) Experienced Services Program (ESP). The NPS-ESP Program provides skilled and experienced individuals age 55 and older with temporary paid assignments that help the National Park Service meet its mission, goals, and objectives in areas where additional expertise, technical skills, or capacity are needed. The Natchez Trace Parkway is recruiting a Tractor Operator whose primary responsibility is mowing and maintaining roadsides along the Parkway and its access roads. This includes all aspects of landscape maintenance, including the operation of lawn mowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, and other equipment as necessary.

Requirements

  • Age 55 or older and legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent and have a minimum of five (5) years of advanced experience operating tractors and towed or attached equipment, such as brush hogs, for mowing grass and brush on varying terrain and slopes.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of tractor and mowing equipment maintenance and the ability to perform minor equipment repairs independently.
  • Be able to safely operate large vehicles and trailers.
  • Be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Physically capable of safely operating equipment for extended periods and performing the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Operate farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment on steep hillsides and rough terrain where there is a risk of equipment overturning. Examples of work performed include contour plowing, planting and mowing on steep slopes, constructing erosion-control structures, and operating equipment for earthmoving projects requiring close tolerances.
  • Perform daily preventive maintenance and make repairs and adjustments to tractors and related equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing belts, chains, and cables; changing oil and filters; checking batteries; conducting safety inspections; and performing other required servicing.
  • Perform pavement maintenance activities, including crack sealing, pothole patching, and shoulder maintenance.
