About The Position

The Track Laborer is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and installing track and track components, including rail, ties, bars, and ballast. This role also involves maintaining track switches, fences, bridges, and crossings, as well as correcting deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge. The Track Laborer will cut rails, adjust and roll rails, and manage tie plates. Responsibilities include drilling holes in rails, sorting track material, clearing vegetation and debris from the right-of-way, and maintaining drainage. The position requires ensuring compliance with all railroad safety rules and regulations, including those from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The Track Laborer will participate in group discussions, maintain maintenance-of-way documentation, and receive instructions from various official sources. Additionally, the role involves operating equipment for track structure and railroad property maintenance, and assisting Foremen/Track Inspectors and Machine Operators/Welders as directed.

Requirements

  • Track maintenance experience
  • Heavy machine/equipment operating experience
  • High School diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Employees must be able to meet and comply with the manufacturer’s weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing their duties, including the safety rating for ladders (both portable and affixed) and fall arrest equipment
  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Reach, bend, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, sit, stand, balance and lift in the course of duties
  • Talk/hear (communicate, detect, converse with, discern, convey, express oneself, exchange information)
  • See (detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, estimate, assess)
  • Must possess at least 20/40 in each eye with or without corrective lenses.
  • Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors displayed by signals, signs, etc.
  • Has ability to distinguish with no more than four (4) errors in a sixteen (16) plate isochromatic test.
  • Must possess an average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40db at 500HZ 1000HZ and 2000HZ, aided or unaided
  • Work safely, follow standard procedures, be alert and take necessary precautions to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
  • Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examinations
  • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
  • Must pass and maintain all required assessments, certifications and licenses
  • Must pass a background screening

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), preferred
  • 5 or more years’ experience in the railroad industry preferred
  • Welding experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair and/or install track and track components, such as the rail, ties, bars, ballast etc.
  • Inspect, repair and/or install replace track switches
  • Inspect, repair and/or install fences, waylands, bridges, street and railroad crossings
  • Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge
  • Cut rails to specific lengths
  • Adjust, lift and roll rails
  • Slide and align tie plates
  • Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together
  • Sort track material for loading and unloading
  • Clear brush, vegetation, snow, litter etc. from right-of-way; establish and maintain drainage
  • Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Participate in group discussions including unit meetings, job briefings, safety meetings or process reviews
  • Maintain maintenance-of-way documentation such as summaries and reports
  • Receive instructions, requests, orders, and information from posted bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulation manuals
  • Operate equipment necessary to inspect, repair and improve track structure and other railroad property/facilities
  • Assist Foremen/Track Inspectors and Machine Operators/Welders, as directed
