About The Position

The Track Head Boys Coach supervises sport-specific student-athletes and assistant coaches in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include adherence to the Gadsden Independent School District’s rules, regulations, and Athletic Philosophy; promoting and encouraging students to play sports; and treating student-athletes in a professional manner in conjunction with the athletic coordinator and campus principal. The role also involves developing a program that excels in athletic performance, classroom achievement, and community expectations, while enforcing a "Code of Ethics" for all athletes and teaching sportsmanship. The coach is responsible for the conduct and well-being of all players and assistant coaches, and must conduct themselves in a manner that brings credit to themselves, their team, and the school. They are expected to maintain open communication with participants, teachers, administrators, and parents, and monitor academic performance to ensure student-athlete success. The coach must be familiar with and follow the policies and guidelines of the Gadsden Independent School District and the New Mexico Activities Association, ensuring all required paperwork is completed. They report inappropriate behavior to the Campus Principal and Athletic Coordinator, and supervise and evaluate assistant coaches. The coach is responsible to the Principal and Athletic Director for the entire program (grades 7-8), attends professional meetings and clinics, and works with other staff to upgrade the athletic program. Injured participants must not be allowed to play until cleared by a medical professional. The coach cooperates with other coaches and programs, encourages athletes to participate in other sports, and coordinates facility use. They also work directly with and support the high school program and head coach, aligning offensive and defensive strategies with the high school’s philosophy. Coaching strategies should reflect technical knowledge and the ability to adapt to game situations, utilizing up-to-date philosophies and sound teaching skills. The coach is responsible for securing facilities after use, supervising the locker room, and ensuring school-purchased uniforms and equipment are used appropriately. They submit inventory, equipment requests, and transportation requests after the season and follow district guidelines for fundraising. The coach agrees to fulfill performance responsibilities in assigned locations and complies with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Employment as a teacher (preferred)
  • Must complete the New Mexico Activities Association’s online course requirements for coaching.
  • CPR Certified
  • Valid New Mexico coaching license
  • Three years specific sport related experience preferred
  • Girls Sport – Female candidate preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for performing the responsibilities listed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises sport-specific student-athletes and assistant coaches (if applicable) in accordance with the Gadsden Independent School District’s policies and applicable laws.

  • Gives priority to the professional performance, duties and responsibilities of classroom instruction (if a classroom teacher).
  • Strictly supports and adheres to participation philosophy and guidelines as established by the Gadsden Independent School District Athletic Department – ALL KIDS WILL PLAY.
  • Sets and defines high levels of expectations and character development.
  • Holds pre-season meetings with athletes and their parents to discuss philosophy, guidelines of the program, Code of Ethics, and responsibilities of the student-athlete.
  • Makes athletic participation “fun”.
  • Promotes individual sport and encourages participation and involvement among middle school and elementary school students within the schools attendance zone.
  • Develops a program that will excel in athletic performance and opportunity, classroom achievement, and community expectations.
  • Creates an environment whereby athletes can achieve academic and athletic success.
  • Enforces the “Code of Ethics” for all athletes.
  • Teaches sportsmanship and sets an example of good moral and physical behavior.
  • Assumes responsibility for the conduct and well-being for all players and assistant coaches.

  • Ensures that all required Gadsden Independent School District and New Mexico Activities Association paperwork is completed and signed on RANK ONE” before student-athlete is allowed to practice or play.
  • Reports inappropriate behavior of any athletic personnel or participant to the Campus Principal and Athletic Coordinator.
  • Supervises and evaluates assistant coaches, cooperatively with the Athletic Coordinator, and assigns their respective duties and responsibilities.
  • Is responsible to the Principal and Athletic Director for the entire program, grades 7 - 8.
  • Attends professional meetings and clinics.
  • Works continually with the Principal, Athletic Director, Athletic Coordinator, and other coaches to upgrade the total athletic program.
  • Does not allow a injured participant to play until cleared by medical professional.
  • Cooperates with and is responsive to the needs of other coaches and their athletic programs.
  • Encourages athletes to participate in other sports.
  • Cooperates with School Athletic Coordinator and other coaches in the scheduling and use of facilities.
  • Cooperates with the Athletic Director in arrangements made for travel.
  • Promotes and supports athletic programs that involve mid-school and elementary school students.
  • Works directly with and supports the high school program and head coach.
  • Ensures offensive and defensive strategies align with the high school’s philosophy.
  • Instructs participants in safety-related issues and the need for reporting injuries to the coach.
  • Implements coaching strategies, in coordination with the high school program, that represent technical knowledge and reflects the ability to create, utilize or react to different game situations.
  • Uses coaching methods and techniques that represent an up-to-date philosophy, the ability to analyze and correct errors, and the employment of sound teaching skills and techniques.
  • Is innovative in using new coaching techniques and ideas.
  • Secures facilities after use; i.e. locker room, equipment room, showers, lights, building, etc.
  • Supervises the locker room before and after each practice until all players have left.
  • Assures that school purchased uniforms and equipment are used only for athletic contests.
  • Submits inventory, equipment requests, and transportation requests to the Athletic Director, through the School Athletic Coordinator, following the completion of the season.
  • Follows the Gadsden Independent School District guidelines for fundraising.
  • Agrees to fulfill performance responsibilities in location(s) assigned.
  • Complies with local, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Performs such other tasks as may be assigned within the parameters of the job analysis.
