Track Design Lead LRT/Passenger Rail

ArcadisCalgary, AB
CA$93,000 - CA$140,000

About The Position

We are seeking a Track Design Lead to join our Canadian Rail and Transit team within our global Mobility group. In this role, you will support the design and planning of rail and transit infrastructure projects, working closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams. You will contribute to delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable rail solutions across freight rail, LRT/subway commuter rail, and port rail projects. This role offers the opportunity to take on increased ownership of design tasks and collaborate across engineering disciplines while developing your technical and project management skills.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of experience in track engineering design or related civil infrastructure roles, preferably within rail or transit projects
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or related) or equivalent technical qualification
  • Solid understanding of track design principles, alignment optimization, and railway infrastructure components
  • Experience using engineering design software such as OpenRail Designer, Ferrovia, MicroStation, Autodesk Civil 3D, or similar tools
  • Knowledge of relevant railway standards and regulations (AREMA, FRA, Transport Canada, UIC, TCRP Report 155)
  • Demonstrated ability to produce detailed design drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation with accuracy
  • Proven capability to collaborate effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and participate in design coordination
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on safety, sustainability, and constructability
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience presenting technical information to diverse audiences

Nice To Haves

  • Working toward or holding a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Canada is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed track and railway infrastructure designs in accordance with applicable regulations and industry standards (e.g., AREMA, FRA, Transport Canada, UIC).
  • Prepare comprehensive alignment plans that address curvature, grading, elevation, drainage and special trackwork (turnouts, crossovers, storage tracks), and optimize layouts for safety, efficiency and sustainability under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Use engineering software to prepare, review and revise design drawings and documentation, ensuring accuracy, compliance and alignment with client specifications.
  • Assist with feasibility studies and alignment assessments by gathering and analyzing site, topographic and environmental data, running models and simulations, and contributing to reports and presentations that summarize findings and recommended routes.
  • Coordinate closely with designers and engineers across subsystems—signalling, traction power, civil works, structures, roads and drainage—to integrate track designs into the broader system.
  • Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings, raise and help resolve technical conflicts, and support constructability and operational considerations to maintain design consistency across disciplines.
  • Ensure design work meets safety, regulatory and quality standards and help refine internal design guidelines as practices evolve.
  • Support project delivery by preparing documentation for client reviews and regulatory approvals, and by providing technical construction support—responding to RFIs, reviewing contractor submissions and resolving on-site or remote design queries as projects progress.

  • Sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions
  • Improving quality of life
  • Opportunity to take on increased ownership of design tasks
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines
  • Developing technical and project management skills
  • Meaningful work
  • Skills-based approach to career pathing
