About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Motor Carrier Division is looking for a dedicated and inquisitive professional to join our team as a Tow Truck Investigator. In this role, you will conduct thorough investigations into tow truck operations, ensure compliance with state statutes and administrative rules, handle public complaints, and build legal/enforcement cases when necessary. You will also conduct certification processes and deliver educational outreach to support safety and fairness across Utah's motor carrier and towing industry. Apply to help us Keep Utah Moving!

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A strong sense of curiosity and a natural investigative mindset.
  • High self-motivation and the initiative to seek out investigations and prioritize tasks beyond assigned incoming complaint work.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and build technical expertise in state motor carrier statutes and regulatory enforcement.
  • Ability to handle complex, multi-faceted investigative cases with discretion and legal accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in investigative work, compliance auditing, or motor carrier regulation enforcement.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and record-keeping skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional outreach, training, or public presentation to industry stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed investigations by gathering and analyzing documentation from tow truck companies.
  • Build solid enforcement cases against tow companies violating towing rules and regulations, preparing cases for appropriate agency administrative actions.
  • Respond promptly to tow truck complaints received through the Motor Carrier Division complaint system.
  • Manage and execute the certification process for tow trucks, tow truck drivers, and tow truck motor carriers.
  • Provide proactive educational training and outreach to members of the towing industry to foster compliance and safety.
  • Maintain a deep understanding and thorough familiarity with Administrative Rules R909-19 and R909-1, federal regulations, state/local traffic laws, and prescribed legal guidelines (including Utah Code Sections 41-6a-401.9, 41-6a-1404, 41-6a-1405, 41-6a-1406, 72-9-301, 72-9-303, 72-9-601 through 72-9-604, and 72-9-701 through 72-9-703).
  • Travel as needed (including potential overnight travel) to conduct field investigations and midpoint reviews, balanced with regular in-office duties.
