Tooling Mechanical Engineer II

Relativity Space•Long Beach, CA
•$104,000 - $156,000

About The Position

Relativity Space is developing the Terran R launch vehicle and expanding its factory automation capabilities. The Tooling and Factory Automation team works across design, manufacturing, and automation to deliver equipment that supports vehicle production and enables more scalable factory operations. Mechanical Design Engineers design and develop tooling and factory automation equipment for manufacturing. They translate high-level requirements and concepts into functional equipment in collaboration with Design and Manufacturing teams, contributing innovation and ingenuity to the development of a highly automated production facility. The role supports the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs and involves projects that vary in size and scale. Engineers manage tooling projects from vendor selection and fabrication through inspection, installation, and commissioning, while collaborating with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of work or project experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling and fixtures for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience using CAD and FEA-based analysis software for structural applications; NX and ANSYS Workbench are preferred.
  • Experience completing projects through the full cycle.
  • Experience with strategic buildout and project management of tooling that supports production.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in design for manufacturability and design for assembly, including taking products from prototype design to production.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines, including mills, lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
  • Experience with custom machine design, including motors, actuators, linear rails or actuators, pneumatics, and bearings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-quality development and production tooling and automation solutions for the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs.
  • Apply mechanical design and analysis principles across multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interpret and apply design and drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5, when creating tooling drawing definitions.
  • Address technical problems involving material handling equipment, assembly fixtures, off-loaders, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
  • Collaborate with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to optimize safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, service life, and maintenance or refurbishment.
  • Manage tooling projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, and commissioning.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Generous PTO and sick leave policy
  • Parental leave
  • Annual learning and development stipend
