About The Position

Manages and directs all activities and employees in the tool room for support of injection molding, blow molding, and all other production departments. Provides technical assistance to all other manufacturing departments as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, plus a minimum of five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Actively participates in technical knowledge building through continuing education.
  • Keeps well informed of technological advances in mold design and mold building and repair.
  • May belong to one or more work related technical organizations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, areas, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Must be able to apply logical reasoning to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must possess good problem solving skills.
  • Must read blueprints and have knowledge of AutoCAD or other graphics software to communicate ideas and concepts to peers and subordinates.
  • Must have operational knowledge of the capabilities of shop equipment such as drill presses, band saws, lathes, milling machines, EDM, welding equipment and grinders.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequently required to stand.
  • Occasionally required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises Tooling Engineer and all toolroom employees.
  • Enforces supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company polices, safety regulations and applicable laws.
  • Responsible for department interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work load; performs employee reviews, disciplining employees and addressing complaints.
  • Responsible for apprentice toolmaker program, including N.C. State Board Certification.
  • Conducts all company required training for the department.
  • Provides technical assistance to molding, quality, engineering, and plant management as necessary.
  • As manager of the department and as member of troubleshooting team, seeks improvements in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency or reduce costs.
  • Maintains tooling repair expense and CAR records.
  • Monitors for CAR close-out and overruns.
  • Responsible for all tooling vendor relationships globally, all RFP’s in adherence with applicable procedures.
  • Confers with planning dept and other supervisors to coordinate activities of tool repairs.
  • Monitors equipment for maintenance and repairs.
  • Reviews engineering changes for departmental input and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Conceptualizes mold/tool designs for product manufacturability.
  • Responsible for all molding quotes, vendor selection, and design revisions on new mold construction.
  • Reads and interprets blue prints and sketches.
  • Directs instructions for outside vendor mold repairs.
  • Participates in new product design and/or redesign reviews.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
