About The Position

The Tooling Engineer will provide input and direction in the sourcing, design, construction, PPAP, and launch of new tools, fixtures, and equipment for future programs and current changes. This role involves assisting Tool-Room personnel and/or vendors in solving production process problems, tool tryouts, and launching new programs. The engineer will also estimate, schedule, and execute engineering changes related to tooling and cost savings, coordinating these changes with various departments to ensure timely try-outs and phase-in periods to meet production schedules or customer delivery dates. Additionally, the position requires providing technical support for product development and design, utilizing technology to meet or exceed customer specifications, and staying informed about the latest tooling technologies. The role also involves establishing new and superior sourcing methods for new tooling to ensure capability and improve cost-effectiveness, assisting Program Managers with internal quotes, and working with production to implement Poka Yoke methods and with Quality Engineers to establish characteristics and achievable tolerances for SPC. Compliance with IATF Standards, OHSA legislative requirements, and environmental guidelines (ISO 14001) is mandatory. The employee must report any product or process non-conformance and maintain due diligence regarding environmental matters.

Requirements

  • Prefer experience as a tool and die maker, apprenticeship certification or Two year experience as a tool room supervisor
  • Five years previous experience as a Tooling Engineer
  • Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees in the organization, customers, suppliers, sub-contractors, engineers, etc.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of the assembly department and press department equipment.
  • Computer skills in the area of spreadsheets, word processing, CAD, CMM, design and data bases.
  • Good interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide input and direction in the sourcing, design, construction, PPAP and Launch of new tools, fixtures and equipment for future programs and current changes.
  • Assist Tool-Room personnel and/or vendors in solving problems arising from production processes, tool tryouts and launching of new programs.
  • Estimate, schedule and execute all engineering changes of tooling, cost savings, etc.
  • Co-ordinate these changes with Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance departments to ensure timely try-out and phase in periods to meet production schedule requirements or customers delivery dates.
  • Provide technical support for product development and design.
  • Use technology on new and current processes and tools to meet or exceed customer specifications.
  • Stay informed of latest technologies with respect to tooling.
  • Report on and implement those ideas, which will be of benefit to IMD.
  • Establish new and superior sourcing methods for new tooling, which will insure capability and improve, cost effectiveness of tools for the program (prototype and/or production).
  • Assist Program Managers to prepare internal quotes for new/existing programs and all engineering changes by issuing, co-ordinating and proposing tooling and gauge suppliers.
  • Work with production to implement Poka Yoke methods.
  • Work with Quality Engineer and others to establish characteristics and achievable tolerances for SPC.
  • Work in compliance with IATF Standards.
  • Work in compliance with all legislative requirements of the OHSA and will be accountable for specific Health and Safety responsibilities.
  • Once aware of a product or process non-conformance, stop further processing and inform area supervisor or manager responsible.
  • Maintains due diligence in regards to environmental matters, minimize any potentially harmful accidents and work in compliance with ISO 14001.
  • Follow the environmental guidelines.
