About The Position

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Tooling Engineer - Energetics Manufacturing Level 2 or 3 for their Operations Engineering department in Elkton, Maryland. The Elkton facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems. This role involves the engineering and design of production tooling components for energetic aerospace propulsion systems, including molds, lifting devices, and fixtures. The engineer will coordinate tooling requirements with various departments, manage fabrication with machine shops and vendors, and oversee tool use in production. Responsibilities also include preparing cost estimates for proposals and identifying design improvement opportunities. The level of hire will depend on the candidate's skills, experience, education, and competency.

Requirements

  • Ability to acquire a Secret Clearance, US Citizenship as a pre-requisite
  • Must have good communication, problem solving skills and demonstrated performance in a team environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or related degree
  • Familiar with machine shop fabrication practices and material selection
  • Working knowledge of basic stress calculations for support structures
  • Experience working within a product team structure, managing events and timelines
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M)
  • Proficient with using Excel, Power Point, Word, CAD and Modeling required
  • Basic Qualifications for level 2: Must have a bachelors degree in STEM plus at least 2 years of experience, preferably in design. Will consider those with a masters degree in STEM and 0 years of experience.
  • Basic Qualifications for level 3: Must have a bachelors degree in STEM plus at least 5 years of experience, preferably in design. Will consider those with a masters degree in STEM and 3 years of experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Composites and rubber molding background is a plus
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX and TcUA
  • Prior manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Active Secret Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Engineering and design of a wide range of production tooling components for energetic aerospace propulsions systems including molds, lifting devices, handling fixtures, test fixtures, etc. and prepares input for documentation.
  • Coordinates and develops tooling requirements with project engineering, process engineering, manufacturing, quality, etc.
  • Responsible for coordinating tooling fabrication with machine shop and/or vendors, which includes establishment of scope and monitoring projects against planned scope.
  • Responsible for tool use, check out, and follow up in production.
  • Prepare estimates of tooling design and fabrication costs for proposals.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvements to existing designs.
