Tooling Design Engineer II

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$99,201 - $138,880

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which supports manufacturing and supply chain across Blue Origin facilities. The Tooling Design Engineer applies standard engineering knowledge and methods to design tools and equipment for manufacturing and operation of aerospace systems. The role researches, develops, and implements improvements to tooling and equipment to improve product quality; works with engineering to identify performance problems and recommend solutions or enhancements; documents experiments, tests, and tooling development activities; and supports production assemblers and operations with new or modified tools. The engineer designs production, development, test, integration, and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units. The role involves addressing technical design challenges across assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines. The engineer collaborates with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering and manages custom-tooling projects from vendor selection and fabrication through inspection, installation, proof testing, and commissioning, while maintaining project schedules and budgets. Relocation is provided. The available shift is A-shift, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

  • At least 3 years of experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling, fixtures, custom machines, or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis, and ability to perform hand calculations, including creating freebody diagrams.
  • Proven experience with CAD-based design software for modeling and drafting.
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including experience taking products from development design to rate production.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing processes and machines, including CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with analysis packages such as ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, or NX Advance Simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Design production, development, test, integration, and advanced manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
  • Apply mechanical design and analysis principles across projects of varying size and scale in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interpret and apply design and drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5, when creating drawings.
  • Address design challenges involving assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
  • Collaborate with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to optimize safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance or refurbishment.
  • Manage custom-tooling projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning.
  • Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.
