About The Position

The Tool Room Technician 2 performs preventative maintenance on all molds according to the schedule, completes required documentation, and manufactures tooling components to specification. This role ensures new tooling functions correctly in a time-efficient manner, records work hours, and provides training to team members. Responsibilities also include assisting with 5S initiatives, spare parts inventory, and the staging, securing, and documentation of molds for shipment. The technician will also assist other Tool Room personnel as needed and participate in all prescribed training activities. In addition to Tool Room Technician 1 duties, this role involves completing press calls for production, troubleshooting, and diagnosing repair needs. Repairs and tool servicing are performed using benchwork skills (venting, fitting, polishing, pneumatic tools), electrical troubleshooting, hot runner maintenance, and welding. The technician will operate Tool Room equipment such as milling machines and surface grinders. All other duties as assigned by Tool Room leadership.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Minimum 3 years on job experience as Machinist/Tool and Die Maker.
  • Communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of precision measuring equipment.
  • Geometry and trigonometry understanding with basic math skills.
  • English reading and writing.
  • Working knowledge of shop machining equipment.
  • Experience with lifting devices – ie. jib and overhead cranes, including a working knowledge of rigging for crane use.
  • Ability to read blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD Models.
  • Meets requirements outlined in forms governing job function.
  • Understanding of key Quality & Environmental Management Systems procedures related to job function.
  • Basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Preventative Maintenance service on all molds as per the PM schedule, including the completion of all required documentation.
  • Manufacture tooling components to specification and ensure the proper working of new tooling in the most time-effective manner.
  • Record all worked hours and allocate them to the appropriate job number.
  • Provide training to the Tool Room team members as needed.
  • Assist with 5S in the Tool Room area.
  • Assist with spare parts and common component inventory control and documentation.
  • Assist with the delivery to and from Tool Room all molds requiring repair or service and return them to proper storage or machine as required.
  • Assist to properly stage, secure, and document molds to be shipped in and out.
  • Assist the Tool Room personnel when extra help is required.
  • Participate in all prescribed training activities as required.
  • Complete press calls as required by production, including troubleshooting and diagnostics to determine if repairs can be completed in-press or if the tool has to be pulled and delivered to the Tool Room.
  • Complete repairs and tool service using benchwork skills, including but not limited to venting, fitting, polishing and the use of pneumatic tools.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs to electrical components on the tools.
  • Perform hot runner maintenance.
  • Complete repairs and tool service using welding skills.
  • Use of Tool Room equipment – ie. milling machine, surface grinder, and/or other machines as required by the Tool Room leadership.
