About The Position

Tool/Fixture maker trainees will work under the supervision of Journeyman Tool/Fixture makers, and be required to successfully complete the Apprentice Tool/Fixture program in a 4-5 year period. Attends and successfully completes formal classroom training programs. Learn to perform all duties required for the Journeyman Tool/Fixture maker.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must obtain a Herman Miller Inc. Fork lift license.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude for mechanical reasoning.
  • Proven proficiency in reading blue prints, equipment manuals, drawings and schematic.
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment.
  • Posses a well motivated work style and excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of employees to complete work assignments.
  • Willingness to participate in internal and external classes to advance learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to use office communication /automation software currently being used at HMI.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.
  • Must be able to comprehend and speak the English language.
  • Must attain a minimum of 'C' grade in all required classes.
  • Successfully complete an Apprentice program in a 4-5 year period, including 500-600 hrs of predetermined classroom instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, build, and install modifications to production machines.
  • Make prototype machines, and assembly fixtures.
  • Document modifications or changes to designs and communicate changes to engineering.
  • Embrace and support HMI safety polices.
  • Interact daily with engineering, vendors, customers, and management.
  • Learn proper use of hand tools for fitting and assembling gauges, and other mechanical and metal-forming equipment.
  • Learn safe methods to operate milling machines, lathes, grinders, welding, saws, drill presses, hydraulic presses, sanding equipment, and CNC machinery.
  • Make service calls to other plants.
  • Operate and program CNC machines and make parts from prints or Cad/Cam software.
  • Support a collaborative team environment.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
