About The Position

Position Overview: Tool Design Intern will support the design and development of production tooling and fixtures used in manufacturing operations. This role provides hands-on experience using SolidWorks to create 3D models and detailed drawings while applying design for manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Maintainability (DFMt) principles. The intern will work closely with engineering, production, maintenance, and safety teams, to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, safety, and operational requirements. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the internship, the candidate will be able to: Develop proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and 2D drawing creation Apply design for manufacturability and maintainability principles in real-world applications Understand tooling design considerations including clearance, material selection, and safety Interpret and revise engineering drawings and specifications Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, production, and maintenance teams Gain exposure to change control processes and documentation standards Understand how tooling impacts product quality, cost, and production efficiency

Requirements

  • Sparton interns must meet the following criteria:
  • Active pursuit of a Bachelor or Graduate degree at an Accredited Institution and be able to provide documentation to confirm your degree progress.
  • (Please include any specific degree(s) or coursework that would be ideal for this internship)
  • Current class standing of sophomore or above (30 credits)
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to work on-site in DeLeon Springs, FL

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing production tooling, fixtures, and related components using SolidWorks
  • Create and update detailed 2D drawings and 3D models in accordance with company standards
  • Support design efforts by applying DFM and DFMt principles
  • Evaluate tooling designs for proper clearances, functionality, and safe operation
  • Revise and update existing drawings based on engineering changes or production feedback
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into tooling designs
  • Ensure documentation accuracy and proper version control within designated systems
  • Support material selection and basic analysis for tooling applications
  • Assist in troubleshooting tooling-related issues on the production floor
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including engineers, technicians, and production personnel
  • Help maintain organized CAD files, drawing libraries, and project documentation
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling and process efficiency
  • Observe and learn manufacturing processes to better understand tooling application and performance
