About The Position

This role is responsible for building, repairing, and maintaining metal stamping tools using machining operations and measuring instruments. The Tool and Die Maker will plan, coordinate, and record routine maintenance schedules for all dies and tools. They will work from blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions to create or modify tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures needed for production, assembly, and quality control. This position requires verifying dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts, tools, and dies, conducting test runs, and inspecting tools and dies for defects. The role also involves selecting appropriate metals, understanding heat-treating principles, operating machine tools, and fabricating parts for plant equipment maintenance. Additionally, maintaining preventative maintenance schedules for machining equipment is a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant manufacturing experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read blueprints and measurement devices.
  • Ability to calculate dimensions, angles, degrees using instruments such as protractors, micrometers, scribes, rulers, and angle plates.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Access (MPS Data Base)
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Builds, repairs, and maintains metal stamping tools using machining operations and measuring instruments on pierce, form, deep draw, and progression dies.
  • Plans, coordinates and records routine maintenance schedules for all dies and tools.
  • Works from blueprints, sketches or verbal instructions to create or modify tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures needed for production, assembly and quality control.
  • Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts, tools and dies, for conformance to specifications, using instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Conducts test runs with tools or dies to ensure parts meet specifications; adjusts as necessary.
  • Inspects tools and dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Selects metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance.
  • Understands heat-treating principles and be able to set pyrometer controls of heat-treating furnaces, and feed or place parts, tools, or assemblies into furnaces to harden.
  • Sets up and operates conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribe dimensions or finishes.
  • Lifts, positions, and secures machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Inspects and troubleshoots production equipment to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects and makes necessary adjustments to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Fabricates and installs parts required in the repair and maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Maintains adequate preventative maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating machining equipment used daily.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
