About The Position

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist is responsible for providing intensive, evidence-based tobacco treatment services to adult smokers (18 years and older), including persons using electronic smoking devices or other emerging products containing nicotine, from identified priority populations to help them quit smoking. Priority populations include persons who identify with LGB&T communities, Native Hawaiians, persons with mental health and/or substance abuse challenges, pregnant women, and low socio-economic status populations. Hawaiʻi Health & Harm Reduction Center (HHHRC) provides harm reduction-focused services to marginalized populations in Hawai’i, including people living with and/or affected by HIV, hepatitis, substance use, homelessness, and the transgender, LGBQ, and the Native Hawaiian communities. HHHRC bridges gaps and helps individuals access essential resources such as housing, health care, entitlements, and treatment. We foster health, wellness, and systemic change in Hawai’i and the Pacific through outreach, care services, advocacy, training, prevention, education, and capacity building.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Non-judgmental attitude and the ability to respect the knowledge, actions, and feelings of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work well and thrive professionally in an atmosphere of significant diversity, working with marginalized populations.
  • Familiarity with Hawai’i cultures/languages and culturally sensitive to the needs of the diverse communities of Hawai’i.
  • Ability to work autonomously; self-motivated, organized, and flexible.
  • High School diploma/GED plus 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) of human services work experience.
  • Certification as a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) or qualified to be CTTS-certified.
  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • TB Clearance
  • Hep B Clearance and/or Vaccination
  • Must pass Center for Medicare/CMS eligibility screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree plus 2,000 hours (1 year full-time) of human services work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide intensive tobacco cessation interventions adapted to the needs of priority populations based on best practices and evidence-based programming.
  • Provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and other approved pharmacotherapy to tobacco users.
  • Participate in program evaluation with the external program evaluator.
  • Collaborate with the Hawai’i Tobacco Quitline to provide comprehensive cessation services.
  • Attend meetings and trainings to enhance staff knowledge and program capacity.
  • Educate clients and community groups on the role of tobacco cessation in preventing chronic disease and promoting wellness.
  • Conduct in-service education and workshops for professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Work as a team member with in-office physicians, nurses, social workers, and health educators.
  • Conduct HLD Outreach including community events and venues.
  • Perform additional duties as needed and assigned.
