About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Thrift Store Clerk to provide friendly, courteous service to customers, sort incoming products, and assist the Thrift Store Manager in the maintenance of all store operations. This position reports to the Thrift Store Manager but may also receive work assignments from other Lawson Ministries management staff. The role involves promoting a positive customer environment, meeting sales budgets, processing and pricing donations, replenishing inventory, opening and closing the store, handling customer transactions accurately, implementing store layout plans, maintaining store cleanliness, and contributing to a safe environment for staff and customers. The position also requires understanding and supporting The Salvation Army's mission, maintaining confidentiality, acting as a responsible team member, representing the organization professionally, participating in performance appraisals and professional development, and adhering to agency policies and procedures. Health and safety compliance, including reporting issues and maintaining a clean and organized store, is also crucial. The role involves managing the thrift store till and the Moneris system for credit and debit transactions.

Requirements

  • Minimum completion of Public School with completion of highschool preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of cashier/retail experience.
  • Computer experience including use of MS Office suite.
  • Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Defibrillation training is required. (must be verified with copy of certificate).
  • Ability to physically stand and/or walk for long periods of time as well as the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening secured through either the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment; Note: A satisfactory criminal background check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a friendly and courteous environment and service to customers.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer standards.
  • Process donations received, unloading, lifting, sorting and pricing items as per store policy.
  • Replenish inventory levels based on the direction of the store manager.
  • Be responsible for opening and closing of the store while on shift and take on responsibilities for all duties of the shift.
  • Be responsible for the effective and efficient management and the accurate completion of all customer transactions including the handling of cash, credit & debit transactions, etc.
  • Ensure the proper and accurate recording of all daily sales.
  • Implement store layout plans and window displays that are tasteful and attractive to customers.
  • Ensure the general upkeep, cleanliness and maintenance of the store, storage area, washrooms, staff lunchroom and main office areas.
  • Contribute to the safety of all staff and customers by assisting with snow removal, clearing of fire exits and ensuring that there are no obstacles left inside or outside the store.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Thrift Store Manager or Lawson Ministries management.
  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities and support the Mission in all aspects of work, including the manner in which responsibilities are fulfilled.

  • Engage in annualized performance appraisal with the Thrift Store Manager.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training as required.
  • Complete all required record-keeping and documentation tasks as outlined in the Service Responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate understanding of agency policy, procedures and philosophy.
  • Be responsible and uphold the professional development as well as to participate in professional development activities as deemed appropriate by the Thrift Store Manager.
  • Function as a responsible member of the team by attitude, confidentiality, reliability and performance.
  • Maintain professional integrity and honesty in the workplace and to report any observed infractions of the policy manual to either the Thrift Store Manager or Lawson Ministries management.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Report any issues or concerns to your Health & Safety representative or the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage).
  • Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary.
  • Ensure client follow through and compliance with territorial health & safety processes and legislative requirements, including training.
