Principal/Senior Principal Thermal Analysis Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Baltimore, MD
•$108,800 - $203,600•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman is hiring a Principal or Senior Principal Thermal Analysis Engineer for its team in Linthicum, Maryland. The role supports thermal design across airborne, ground-mobile, stationary-ground, and surface naval programs, spanning systems and components such as environmental control systems, sensors, radars, chassis, circuit card assemblies, and devices. The position level depends on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The engineer designs advanced electronics thermal-management solutions and performs thermal analyses using heat-transfer principles. Relevant applications include liquid-cooled, air-cooled, conduction-cooled, two-phase-flow, and refrigeration solutions for mission systems. The role leads thermal design by owning requirements, architecture, and performance, mentoring less experienced engineers, and presenting findings to internal and external stakeholders. The position requires daily onsite work in Linthicum and the ability to obtain or transfer an active U.S. Government Secret clearance before starting. Travel is 10% of the time, and relocation assistance may be available. The Principal level requires a relevant STEM degree and experience corresponding to the degree level, along with at least five years of experience in electronics thermal analysis and optimization and five years applying thermal engineering principles to cooling hardware in high-power-density environments. The Senior Principal level has corresponding degree-and-experience thresholds and requires at least eight years in each of those experience areas. Northrop Grumman describes its benefits as including a health plan, savings plan, paid time off, education assistance, training and development, and a 9/80 work schedule where available. Other listed benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, company-paid holidays, and PTO.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience, master’s degree and 3 years, or Ph.D. and 1 year in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field for the Principal level.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience, master’s degree and 6 years, or Ph.D. and 4 years in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field for the Senior Principal level.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance; the position is contingent on obtaining or transferring an active Secret clearance before starting.
  • Ability to work onsite daily at the Linthicum, Maryland facility.
  • Principal level: 5+ years of electronics design experience emphasizing thermal analysis and optimization of mission-critical electronics systems, and 5+ years applying thermal engineering principles to air-cooled, liquid-cooled, and conduction-cooled hardware in high-power-density environments.
  • Senior Principal level: 8+ years of electronics design experience focused on thermal architecture, analysis, and optimization for defense or other safety- or mission-critical systems, and 8+ years applying thermal engineering principles to air-cooled, liquid-cooled, and conduction-cooled hardware in high-power-density environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DoD Secret or higher security clearance.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with ANSYS Icepak, ANSYS Thermal Desktop, ANSYS Fluent, or similar electronics cooling or thermal analysis codes.
  • 2+ years leading end-to-end thermal design of defense-platform hardware, from requirements definition through verification.
  • Experience advising programs on system-level thermal trades and collaborating with multidisciplinary systems, mechanical, RF, electrical, and reliability teams from concept through detailed design.
  • 2+ years of experience designing hardware to meet transient thermal conditions.
  • Experience advancing electronics thermal-management solutions such as high-heat-flux interfaces, two-phase or advanced convective cooling, and compact high-power electronics.
  • Knowledge of advanced convective and two-phase thermal management for high-heat-flux or high-power-density applications, including analytical, high-fidelity numerical, and experimental methods.
  • Prior experience leading thermal design at multiple integration levels, including system, chassis, CCA, and microelectronics, for defense or aerospace hardware.
  • Experience planning and executing thermal design verification testing, correlating analysis with test data, and updating models based on results.

Responsibilities

  • Design advanced electronics thermal-management solutions using heat-transfer principles to optimize thermal performance.
  • Perform electronics thermal analysis for mission-system platforms, including air-cooled, liquid-cooled, two-phase-flow, and refrigeration solutions.
  • Own thermal requirements, thermal architecture, and thermal performance for designs.
  • Lead thermal designs and mentor less experienced thermal engineers.
  • Provide oral and written presentations to internal and external customers and stakeholders.
