Thermal Analysis Engineer

Northrop Grumman•Baltimore, MD
•$87,600 - $131,400•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Thermal Analysis Engineer for its thermal design team in Linthicum, Maryland. The team supports programs across airborne, ground mobile, ground stationary, and naval surface applications, covering systems and components ranging from environmental control systems, sensors and radars to chassis, circuit card assemblies, and devices. The engineer will design advanced electronics thermal-management solutions and perform thermal analysis using heat-transfer principles. The role includes leading thermal design by owning requirements, architecture, and performance, mentoring less experienced engineers, and presenting technical work to internal and external stakeholders. The position is contingent on obtaining or transferring an active U.S. Government Secret clearance before starting. Daily onsite work is required, with travel listed at 10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience, or a master’s degree and 0 years of experience; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance; a final clearance is required to start, though an active clearance is not required for consideration.
  • Ability to work onsite daily at the Linthicum, Maryland facility.
  • 2 years of experience in electronics design emphasizing thermal analysis and optimization of mission-critical electronics systems, such as airborne, ground, or maritime platforms.
  • 2 years of experience applying thermal engineering principles to air-cooled, liquid-cooled, and conduction-cooled hardware in high-power-density environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Active DoD Secret or higher security clearance.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience with ANSYS Icepak, ANSYS Thermal Desktop, ANSYS Fluent, or similar electronics-cooling or thermal-analysis codes.
  • At least 2 years leading end-to-end thermal design of defense-platform hardware from requirements definition through verification.
  • Experience advising programs on system-level thermal tradeoffs and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including systems, mechanical, RF, electrical, and reliability, from concept through detailed design.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing hardware to meet transient thermal conditions.
  • Experience advancing electronics thermal-management solutions, such as high-heat-flux interfaces, two-phase or advanced convective cooling, and compact high-power electronics.
  • Knowledge of advanced convective and two-phase thermal management for high-heat-flux or high-power-density applications, including analytical, high-fidelity numerical, and experimental methods.
  • Prior experience leading thermal design at multiple integration levels, including system, chassis, CCA, and microelectronics, for defense or aerospace hardware.
  • Experience planning and executing thermal design verification testing, correlating analysis with test data, and updating models based on results.

Responsibilities

  • Design advanced electronics thermal-management solutions using heat-transfer principles to optimize thermal performance.
  • Perform electronics thermal analysis for liquid-cooled, air-cooled, two-phase-flow, and refrigeration solutions used on airborne, ground-based, and naval platforms.
  • Lead thermal designs, owning thermal requirements, architecture, and design performance.
  • Mentor less experienced thermal engineers.
  • Present information orally and in writing to internal and external customers and stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Health Plan and health insurance coverage.
  • Savings Plan.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
  • Education Assistance.
  • Training and Development.
  • 9/80 work schedule where available.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Company-paid holidays.
  • Potential eligibility for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus, depending on the position.
