Thermal Analysis : Engineer Systems Modeling & Simulation – Level 4

Northrop Grumman•Chandler, AZ
•$122,800 - $184,200•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Level 4 Thermal Analysis Engineer for its Thermal Analysis team within Launch Vehicles at the Chandler, Arizona facility. Under minimal direction, the engineer performs thermal engineering analysis, design, and test work supporting missile and space systems. The role includes analyzing heat transfer and temperatures for avionics, structures, and thermal protection systems on the ground and in space, and predicting temperatures to inform thermal protection designs for rocket components on the ground and in flight. The engineer applies engineering theory and established methods, mathematical formulas, design and test information, handbook data, and other resources to solve analytical engineering problems. They interpret and apply company, commercial, and military specifications and customer requirements; compile and interpret flight, test, and material data; and produce engineering documentation and technical analyses supporting design, integration, and testing. The engineer will develop proficiency with specialized thermal analysis software and perform other duties as requested. The role requires travel approximately 10% of the time. Relocation assistance may be available. A clearance is not required to start, but the employee must be able to obtain a U.S. Government Secret clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of related engineering experience, or a master's degree in STEM and 6 years of experience, or a Ph.D. in STEM and 4 years of related engineering experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
  • Strong thermal background with demonstrated experience and knowledge as a thermal analyst supporting launch vehicle and/or missile programs.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Familiarity with thermodynamics, aerodynamics, compressible flow, and TPS design.
  • Computer skills including standard word-processing and spreadsheet experience.
  • Ability to listen effectively, take direction, show initiative, accomplish assigned tasks, and complete work in a timely manner.

  • Master's degree in mechanical and/or aerospace principles.
  • Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance or higher at the time of application.
  • Experience with Thermal Desktop, StarCCM+, and Matlab.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thermal engineering tasks involving analysis, design, or testing.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge and engineering techniques to analytical engineering problems.
  • Select or modify proven methods, mathematical formulas, previous design and test information, handbook data, and other available information for assigned work.
  • Perform thermal analysis of avionics, structures, and thermal protection systems (TPS).
  • Analyze heat transfer for components and systems on the ground and in space.
  • Address engineering issues using expertise in engineering or related thermal sciences as applied to missile and space systems.
  • Use classical heat transfer methods and software to predict temperatures and design thermal protection for rocket components on the ground and in flight.
  • Develop proficiency with Thermal Desktop, ATAC, StarCCM+, FIAT, and other specialized thermal analysis codes.
  • Interpret, select, and apply company, commercial, and military specifications and customer requirements to complete analyses.
  • Produce engineering documentation and technical reports and analyses supporting design, integration, and testing.
  • Gather, compile, and interpret technical data, including flight data, test data, and material test reports.
  • Perform other duties upon request.
