About The Position

Manages, coordinates, and evaluates rehabilitation therapy care practices, clinical programming, personnel, and resources. Responsible to allocate available resources for the efficient delivery of rehabilitation care and participates in decision making related to departmental and unit functions. Responsible to complete all aspects of care for assigned patient load, as needed, including evaluations, formulating plan of care, collaboration of care plans, with patient/family/other disciplines, performing therapeutic interventions, education, and meeting all documentation requirements outlined in department. Holds overall accountability for the management of therapy practice within department. Supports the interdisciplinary team model by collaborating with other professional disciplines in developing and implementing clinical programs and evaluating outcomes from those programs. Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with other departmental leaders. Supervises departmental therapy personnel. Provides direction, education and leadership for therapy staff.

Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.
  • Current Alabama Physical, Occupational Therapy or Speech-Language Pathology licensure.
  • Maintain current Alabama license in one of the previous listed clinical specialties.
  • Minimum of two year’s clinical experience in outpatient, inpatient, and/or rehab setting.
  • BLS Certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Commission on Accreditation of Rehab Facilities (CARF) standards or experience working at a CARF accredited facility preferred for inpatient rehab manager.

Responsibilities

  • Manages departmental operational and capital budgets, including personnel budgets; regularly reviews expenses and revenue and justifies variances, including overtime, as requested.
  • Interviews, selects, hire and retain employees with appropriate skill mix of qualified, competent, patient-oriented therapy personnel.
  • Ensures orientation and training for employees, including initial and ongoing competency assessments
  • Manages employee performance
  • Promotes, demotes, or transfers employees to meet organizational needs.
  • Executes progressive discipline up to and including termination
  • Manages departmental productivity standards
  • Meets compliance requirements.
  • Approves payroll and is responsible for accurate payment of employees
  • Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding quality and outcome goals, departmental goals, 5 keys to excellence, behavioral standards, and DCH Mission and Vision.
  • Evaluates patient census/acuity to determine staffing plans on a daily, weekly, and annual basis to meet patient care needs.
  • Provides input into and maintains appropriate staffing levels and skill mix among staff members.
  • Develops a plan for the provision of high quality, cost-effective care for therapy patients.
  • Provides input to the strategic planning process for the department and unit; implements strategies and programs for rehabilitation care that are consistent with the policies, goals, and objectives of the facility.
  • Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of care and effectiveness and efficiency of systems within the therapy setting; institutes practice changes based on evaluation and supports interdisciplinary quality and performance improvement efforts.
  • Ensures that current evidence-based therapy practices are incorporated into clinical practice and delivery of care.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends in therapy services, rehabilitation, and healthcare and helps staff identity the impact of these trends on the delivery of care.
  • Promotes professional rehabilitation therapy and rehabilitation values, goals, and objectives (e.g., patients’ achievement of functional gain patient education, maintenance of optimal health and quality of life, avoidance of further complications of disability, and return to an active role in the discharge setting).
  • Encourages therapy personnel to use critical thinking and ethical practice in managing patient care and provides for continuity from admission through discharge and successful reintegration into family, community, and/or alternative discharge setting.
  • Responsible for staff assignments using available resources effectively and appropriately to provide efficient, safe, and effective care of therapy patients.
  • Defines and oversees the orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing development of licensed and unlicensed personnel involved in providing patient care and other services.
  • Acts as a role model, mentor, and coach to the therapy staff and provides developmental opportunities for staff to acquire clinical skills and expertise; encourages staff to seek advanced preparation and specialty certification.
  • Assumes accountability for remaining current regarding standards of care established by professions and organizations (APTA, AOTA, AHSA, AMRPA, etc.), regulatory bodies (The Joint Commission, Commission on Accreditation of Rehab Facilities) , and government/insurance companies (BC, CMS, etc.) to remain compliant and provide care using best practice principles.
  • Accepts responsibility to advance manager’s personal professional clinical and management skills
  • Completes planning, annual revision, and implementation of unit/departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Maintains employee contact by meeting with staff members individually on a regular basis.
  • Regularly attends hospital and unit or division meetings, educational offerings, and assigned committees.
  • Continually evaluates the attitudes, morale and interpersonal relationships of staff members; promotes methods to improve in these areas; consistently motivates staff in a positive manner
  • Assures staff attends and/or completes mandatory educational offerings.
  • Provides for a safe environment for staff members, patients, and visitors
  • Review, collect and evaluate relevant clinical data.
  • Formulate and implement an appropriate patient care plan based on patient needs and best practice.
  • Collaborates and coordinates patients care plans with patient/family and other care providers.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures for clients as outlined in patient’s plan of care.
  • Participates in patient/family teaching.
  • Maintain clinical and professional competency.
  • Completes all documentation requirements in the established time frame.
  • Responsible for supervision of all care delivered by assistants or aides, communicating routinely as to patient needs/goals.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
