About The Position

Under the supervision of a CTRS, the main purpose of this intern position will be to learn to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate Therapeutic Recreation programs for psychiatric inpatients and/or assisting living residents, function as a member of the treatment team, and maintain patient records. This position will also prepare for the profession of therapeutic recreation and NCTRC exam. This position must have the ability to work with individuals with mental health disorders, must be able to make decisions in high-pressure situations, and must exercise confidentiality regarding patient medical information. This position must be able to work day, evening, or rotating shifts to include holidays and weekends.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience assisting in the implementation of prescribed activity therapy programs under the supervision of a healthcare professional to include assisting in patient/client assessments for mentally ill, aged, physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.
  • Ability to work with individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Ability to make decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality regarding patient medical information.
  • Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland (if assigned duties requiring operation of an automobile).
  • Possession of a Class “C” motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland (if required to operate certain vehicles).
  • Successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training.
  • Obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment (if required at facilities with a swimming pool).

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, with at least 15 credit hours in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Therapy classifications or Therapy specialty codes in the Therapeutic Recreation field of work.
