About The Position

Tomball Controls is seeking an experienced Test Technician Supervisor for its location in Von Ormy, Texas. Tomball Controls manufactures custom fuel tanks, sound-attenuated enclosures, and access platforms for emergency power generators. The Test Technician Supervisor leads and performs load bank testing of diesel-powered generator systems in accordance with manufacturer requirements, customer specifications, applicable electrical standards, and company safety procedures. The role requires working knowledge of diesel generator operation, electrical distribution systems, load bank connections and operation, generator controls, and electrical and mechanical hazards. The supervisor continuously monitors generator and load bank performance, recognizes abnormal conditions, and has the authority and responsibility to reduce load or terminate testing when conditions are unsafe or outside acceptable parameters. Personnel safety and equipment protection take priority over schedules and test completion. The supervisor also leads field technicians, maintains control of testing operations, communicates with customers and other responsible personnel, and completes accurate test documentation. The position involves travel to customer sites and may require extended hours. Work may take place outdoors and in industrial, construction, and mechanical environments, including around operating generators and energized electrical equipment.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience operating and/or testing diesel generator systems.
  • Demonstrated experience connecting and operating generator load banks.
  • Strong understanding of three-phase electrical systems.
  • Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams and generator documentation.
  • Working knowledge of generator controls and protective functions.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical safety hazards.
  • Ability to recognize abnormal generator operation and determine when a test should be reduced or terminated.
  • Ability to safely use electrical test instruments.
  • Ability to lead technicians in a field-service environment.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites and work extended hours when required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial diesel generators and generator paralleling systems.
  • Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, MTU, Detroit, or other major generator manufacturers.
  • Experience with large industrial load banks.
  • Experience with resistive and reactive load banks.
  • NFPA 70E training.
  • OSHA safety training.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Experience working around medium-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Previous field-service or Test Technician Supervisor experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform load bank testing of diesel-powered generator systems.
  • Review generator nameplate information, manufacturer requirements, customer specifications, and test procedures before work begins.
  • Determine load bank configuration and loading requirements based on generator capacity and test objectives.
  • Safely connect, operate, unload, disconnect, and secure load banks and temporary testing equipment.
  • Verify voltage, phase rotation, frequency, grounding, and connection configuration before applying load.
  • Inspect cables, connections, terminations, and load bank equipment before energizing and monitor them during testing.
  • Apply load in controlled increments and continuously monitor generator and load bank performance.
  • Record required operating parameters at appropriate intervals and perform tests for the specified duration and load percentages when conditions permit.
  • Recognize abnormal or unsafe operating conditions, reduce or remove load, initiate emergency shutdown when needed, and terminate tests when appropriate.
  • Establish acceptable operating parameters, compare actual conditions against them, and recognize trends that may indicate developing problems.
  • Notify appropriate supervisors, customer representatives, or responsible personnel when a test is terminated, and document the reason.
  • Follow electrical safety requirements, including applicable OSHA, NFPA 70E, company, and customer procedures; use properly rated PPE and test equipment; and follow lockout/tagout and voltage-verification procedures when applicable.
  • Establish work boundaries, verify equipment status, ensure proper phase identification and grounding, inspect connections, and avoid bypassing safety devices or interlocks without an approved procedure.
  • Continuously evaluate mechanical, environmental, and work-area hazards and stop testing when conditions create unacceptable risk.
  • Assign and supervise technicians according to their qualifications and experience; conduct or participate in pre-job safety meetings and review the JHA/JSA.
  • Ensure technicians understand procedures, hazards, generator operating parameters, and test-termination criteria; maintain control of the operation and stop unsafe work.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, project managers, and other contractors.
  • Complete load bank test reports, record generator identification, nameplate information, electrical readings, load percentages, and test duration, document alarms and interruptions, report equipment concerns, and obtain required customer signatures.
  • Protect personnel and customer equipment and prevent avoidable equipment failures through observation and sound judgment.
