Test Engineer (Onsite)
About The Position
Hurricane Mesa Test Facility (HMTF) is a unique R&D test site that validates ejection seat systems and subsystems using a supersonic rocket sled track. Testing spans sled‑track events with aircraft-representative bodies and anthropometric manikins from zero airspeed/altitude up to and beyond the speed of sound, along with a broad spectrum of subsystem and energetic component tests. This role is a hands‑on Test Engineer responsible for supporting test setup, execution, and general technical operations across all onsite programs. The engineer will contribute to sled‑performance calculations, data analysis, high‑speed camera operation, and other tasks related to rocket‑sled and aircraft escape system testing.
Requirements
- Engineering, physics, or related technical background.
- Hands‑on experience with technical equipment or instrumentation.
- Experience with performing calculations and interpretation test data.
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
Nice To Haves
- Experience designing mechanical assemblies using SolidWorks or NX
- Experience with high‑speed video systems or other camera platforms.
- Experience working with energetic materials (CAD/PAD, rockets, explosives).
- Experience in R&D environments, test operations, or escape‑system programs.
Responsibilities
- Work as part of an engineering team in developing, testing, and qualifying various aircraft escape systems and components.
- Set up and operate high‑speed cameras (Ametek Phantom and others) to capture test events, including fixed‑position and tracking applications.
- Support safe handling and setup of energetic propulsion devices such as HVAR rocket motors and small explosive initiators under guidance from senior staff.
- Collaborate with engineers on building, modifying, and preparing test fixtures and test articles based on program requirements.
- Perform data analysis on sled performance and complete predictive propulsion and braking calculations.
