About The Position

The Tenant Advocate will be expected to work closely with tenants, lawyers, the court, and community partners. The Tenant Advocate will be involved in many aspects of the work of the EPGP program, such as case management, caseload management, mediation, ensuring grant/data compliance, and conducting community education and outreach at off-site locations. Incumbents in this classification are expected to possess considerable expertise in housing regulations, housing subsidies, mediation techniques, and landlord-tenant relations in general.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in the housing field
  • Experience working with diverse low-income communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong organizational skills and computer literate in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent interviewing, writing, and communication skills.
  • Experience entering and tracking information in electronic formats and running reports.

Nice To Haves

  • bi-lingual preferred
  • College degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience with housing regulations and residential landlord/tenant relations is a plus
  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by NY residents is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Program Manager in providing assistance in matters related to residential landlord/tenant relations.
  • Provides assistance to clients at risk or subject to eviction as the agency’s representative for the purpose of providing guidance and support to clients.
  • Provides mediation services to clients who are having problems with their landlords.
  • Provides support to clients applying for government benefits, such as the one-shot deal, housing subsidies, and other benefits that can help stabilize their housing crisis.
  • Handle special projects assigned by the supervisor
  • Attend Department and Program meetings as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
